hi
Is it necessary to shortlist five universities even before we take the GMAT? I find this rather strange, so can someone confirm this? And post some tips on how you guys selected the universities even before the score was out, on what parametres?

Before you start the test, you`re supposed to fill in the list of 5 univs u wanna apply to. if you`re sure abt the univs, go ahead and fill it quick. They`ll tell you that you HAVE TO fill in the univs before the test. There is a provision that if your univ code doesn`t appear in the list or if u screw up in selection (like i did, more on that later!), you can fill it up manually in a paper form after the test. use this facility. You could say you couldn`t locate he univ you wanted or pressed the finish button by mistake etc, and they`ll give u the form at the end of the test
You KNOW (or have a rough idea of) which schools you would like to go to and which schools are good for you, if only you had a great gmat score, right? So assume that you`ve scored a 700 or whatever and think where would you like to apply with that score! Why so much negativity about your scores BEFORE taking the test itself?!

Anyways, the other way around: Before the test, there is this screen where you are prompted to select 5 univs names from a list of zillion odd unknown universities. Im so stupid i selected one and pressed "next" button thinking it`ll show me another prompt to select the next one....instead, it said "Your university selection process is now complete"...smartass me relaized that you were supposed to hold the ctrl key and select all universities at one go. I raised a little hue and cry and made a sad face and the admin said, no problem, you can select it later. After the test they give you this paper form in which you can write the names of 5 univs and they`ll send it by post. So either you could fabricate an accident like this, or just try your luck and insist that you wanna fill in the school names AFTER the test...whatever works for you!

Note: The above opinions are based on my GMAT experience with Prometric and not with the new vendor. Try them at your own risk!!

Hi. Thanks for all the info, much appreciated. Though i have noted all the points, like I said, I am still doing my graduation and shall be applying only after 2 years. I am sure that whatever research I may put do, someone who has already taken the exam and applied to universities shall be able to offer invaluable advice. So people please tell me which five universities I should mark for now on the basis of my 580 and 600 in KAPS and 680 in GMATPREP. I mean the universities that most Indian students prefer with such scores. Or alternatively, post in the names of universities u selected for the scores to be reported. Also, can anyone tell me wht these scores suggest about my final scores in the actual exams?

You`re new to the admissions game and need more research. there are no "preferred" universities for indian students etc and there are no standard universities where particular scores are suited for. It all depends on your overall profile. Just do a little research on where you wanna go to and pick some schools on top of your mind. Without work exp, your choice of 5 schools will essentially be a random selection. Just pick anything.

i got 610 in my kaplan 1st test and 580 in kaplan second test. i got 730 in my final GMAT. You can do your guesswork based on this.

:satisfie: All views my own...expressed with reference to the context of the impending pre MBA entrance interview.

You dont HAVE TO send your scores to five schools if you dont want to...it's just a free option offered by GMAS. When they show you the screen where you have to choose 5 schools, you can just click "skip" and your scores arent going anywhere! (in that case, why`re you taking the GMAT, again?). You can select even one or two schools and click "finish" and only those schools will reveive your scores. Indians that we are, we might feel this piercing pain in our hearts when we let go of a freebie and that explains why we feel the compulsion to fill in 5 schools, even if know nothing about them! Please note, if you want to send your scores to any school other than the 5 free ones, or if you let go of this option at the time of the exam and then later wanna send scores to schools, you will be charged $30 per school by GMAS. So basically, by giving you 5 free schools, they`re saving you $150. It'll be good if you could do some research beforehand and use those $150 more productively.
