Gave my gmat on 16th. Scored a 710. Obviously I was shocked, did not expect it to be this good. Now I have a workexperience of 1.5 years, but thatas pre-graduation workexperience. And i ve been working for the last 5 months. So, which colleges would you guys suggest? Yeah i know work experience is the biggest hurdle, but i guess I'll have to go with it, because either its this year or its not.
Many thanks. | | | | | | | |

Many thanks. | You wont like hearing this but you should face it: Most univs abroad consider only full time work experience gained AFTER the completion of graduation. so your undergrad work expereince wont be counted. effectively, u`ll be applying with 5 months experience and honetly, that is very low. ur gmat score is good, but gmat is not the only thing that is considered...there are other things like work ex, essays and recos. i dont think u`ll get into a very good b-school with just 5 months...u might get into some average ones...but that`s not worth the investment. i suggest you work for a year and try next year, but if u cant do that then u`ll have to take a big risk and settle for some lower-middle rung b school. Also, your GMAT scores are valid for 5 years so there is still some time you can give yourself to prepare well for the application. Quote: |

thanks you guys for your replies. I met a counselor Mr. Satyanarayan (Pune). He advised that we go ahead with our essays, recos, work-ex details. Also since i have good acads, maybe it would help too. (first rank in college, 3rd year, first rank in college and university rank (top5) 4th year, engineering.) Then send introductory letters and ask the colleges to suggest on my application. If I get a positive response, then I should apply. Anyways i guess the top 20 colleges in USA are ruled out. Any comments please? | | | | | | | |

(2) With a GMAT of 700+ why not wait a couple of years.....what is the hurry ? Why settle for anything less than the best early on in your career.

But i guess ISB is a real long shot, considering the work-ex | Good u`ve seen the light and decided to wait. dont rush yourself...work well for a coupla years. In India, it`s a common mindset to jump into an MBA as soon as you finish your UG, but i dont see the point. i dont understand how a person can manage and lead, or for that matter even UNDERSTAND leadership, by studying from books and without having seen the inside of an office! dont fall for that trap, working is a wonderful way of learning...plus it lets you see and enjoy life in a different perspective. in the absence of sufficient work-ex, MBA is just an academic exercise (the trap is..."sufficient" itself is a subjective term...damn!!).
And btw, ISB is only as long a shot as was any good american b-school that u were applying to. You have pretty good chances as GLIM, but it`s a new institute, research well before joining it. there are a coupla threads on GLIM running here on PG. Search. Sheetal | All u have to do is search, sheetal! there are 2-3 threads running on about GLIM and i think there was an interview of GLIM`s director balachandran-whoever on PG. im taking gmat on december 8th by the way, so we`re close that way! most second round deadlines are between 5-15th jan, u have to check out the individual websites for the exact ones. If you start working on your packages NOW, u`ll make it thru the R2 deadlines. Approvals and celebrations will rarely surround your inner decisions and choices to follow Personal Truth.
