The hindu editorial on 17-06-09.

The Hindu : Opinion / Editorials : Iran on the boil

Unrest in Iran and a possible solution.
-----------------------------------------------

There has been a widespread protest against the declaration of Ahmadinajed as winner in the Iranian presidential elections. These massive protests previously unheard in Iran's history are headed by the supporters of principal opponent Mausavi .They find many eminent supporters including the wife of powerful ayatollah Rafsanjani. Atleast inorder to appease Mr.Rafsanjani, a partial re-counting of votes has been ordered. But the problems are unlikely to end here. What is required is a fresh and unbiased election.

Hi puys!

I think it'll be good for the others if the people who summarize a Hindu editorial either copied the article or gave a link to it(Like Ikruz above did).

Saves on a lot of time and makes the whole process neater.

Just a suggestion.

This thread is basically meant for summarizing the editorials which appear in The Hindu. This is highly recommended for improving comprehension in RCs and of course developing a perspective of different issues. A highly time consuming and dreary job, but worth it. However, once started, it gets you hooked.

Here are my attempts:

The Hindu : Opinion / Editorials : In negative territory

The article deals with the hullabaloo that the occurrence of negative inflation has caused and the author goes on to say that this is because inflation in India is calculated on the basis of Wholesale price index and not consumer price index. The negative inflation also does not imply deflation which in fact is the fall in demand. Economic growth continues to be robust.
The author says that this sharp decline in inflation (which is basically due to the high base last year) has led away from the fact that the food items continue to demonstrate double digit inflation rates which affects the consumers adversely. The govt will take a few measures to counter the challenge thrown by the negative inflation. The author also talks about the need of a single harmonious measure of the state of economy and advocates the system of using consumer price index for tracking inflation which is used in developed countries.

The Hindu : Opinion / Editorials : Katchatheevu is settled

This article refers to the fiasco created by the Tamil Nadu political parties over the issue of fishing rights in a wasteland in an island in Srilanka (Katchatheevu)
According to a treaty, Indian fishermen were allowed access to the wasteland without any formal documents like travel documents or visas. Thus they could be in the island for rest or festivals. But the catch in the waters around Katchatheevu is very low and the fishermen misuse the agreement and try to fish in the richer marine resources of Srilankan territory which resulted in them being shot at by the Srilankan navy or Sea tigers. This created a furore in the political circles in Tamil Nadu and they are after the 'retrieval' of the island which both Indian and Srilankan governemnts in fact consider a 'settled issue'.
The author says that this is a proxy issue and that this is an expression of bitter sentiments by the chauvinistic elements of Tamil Nadu against the elimination of the LTTE.
The Indian fishermen also concede that they are actually after the right to fish in Srilankan waters. This right cannot be granted by Srilanka nor should it be demanded by India as it's not expected of soveriegn countries to do so.

Hope it helped

Editorials for the day: June 23, 2009

Here are my attempts:

The Hindu : Opinion / Editorials : Redemption song

The article basically talks about the renaissance of Pakistan cricket which may have arrived with the T-20 2009 world cup win. With the terrorist attacks held in Lahore in March earlier this year, Pakistan were the unwanted of world cricket. It's wonderful that Pakistan came up with a spirited performance in the world cup and the author talks about Pakistan's salvation through this victory. The author credits the turn-around to Shahid Afridi and also praises the Srilankan cricketers (who were the victims of the terrorist attack) for having played vibrant, inventive cricket and for having emerged as the best team of the tournament till the final.

The Hindu : Opinion / Editorials : Lear’s macaw returns

The article is about the successful conservation initiatives taken by the Brazilian government to protect Lear's macaw, a rare species of parrot. The author talks about the casues of decline of the species: like cutting down the trees they were dependent on, the illegal bird trade and the farmers shooting them down. Also, the rarer a bird gets, higher is the price poachers get. Some species in india also have been affected by it. The author calls for a stronger international effort to stop this trapping and trading of birds which, he says, will definitely yeild positive results like in the case of Lear's macaw.

In the final, he was mature, calm-headed, and clinical without compromising on his mercurial talent — everything that can be said of Pakistan in the title clash.
