forming a group is a great idea but vocab is more about a paradigm shift of one's attitude. Instead of being not curious about words we need to cultivate an attitude where the moment we meet a new word we have an itch to know the meaning hidden behind.

a word is nothing but a sound that we produce that carries an idea or a picture with itself. si getting exposed to more ideas too would help.

to make anything permanent/life long we need enjoy the activity. so stay disciplined, set targets in terms of number of words/day but let the target not be a religious limit.

Be happy and enthusiastic about this beautiful journey towards the land of words:smile: . and a vocab club with once in a month meetings may not be very useful for vocab per se, but yes it might keep u on the right track. do a cost-benefit analysis and see. it may not be worth it.

vocab club - 08-04-2005, 04:41 PM

hi junta
its a nice idea to form a vocab club...like to have more discussion on this
1st of all wat r d thng required for vocab building
1. be serious n alocate time from ur daily routine for vocab building
2. try to add atlist 10 new words in ur kitty daily
3. read a lot of diverse topics to revise n use those words.
4. periodical revision
5. be consistent abt 2., 3., 4.

vocab is very much importent in CAT bcaz it's helps in RC n oth sections...

Somz....

Well I believe the BEST way one can go about improving is by Reading... but then I believe another good way to upgrade one's vocab is trying out:"Norman Lewis - Word Power made easy" book.

cheerz

thanxx for suggestions - 10-04-2005, 11:52 AM

thanxx a lot for suggestions friends. well, i do knw tat reading ,norman lewis, newspapers etc r a gud way of improving vocab but i think thats not sufficient for xam's like iift, xlri, fms which test vocab of a different level altogether than cat. from my xperiences nd interactions with students of these above mentioned b schools ,i found one thing in common , they all had a complete command over barron's word list.( how they do it is a mystery for me !) nd many of them told me tat it was the single most differentiating factor of their gettin a call. newspapers nd reading wud surely spruce up our vocab but it wud take a lot of time which ppl prep for cat 2006 dont have. tat's y i suggested formin a club so tat v really go gung ho abt slayin this many worded monster tat is vocab . more suggestions r welcome.

well, there are lots of interactive softwares available online that help in vocab building. Actually i too hate the english thing of CAT. But i better start liking it from now. Also Flash Cards are an interesting way of learning High Freq Words of Barrons. But the rest i think will just have to be mugged out. ofcourse it is easier said thn done. but who said getting into IIM was easy. But i guess there are the sort of things we have to learn to do to make it to our dream insti -IIM

suggestion - 10-04-2005, 02:44 PM

i do agree with all ,that newspapers and reading are the best way to approach vocab, but i also do agree that this way it wud take a lot of time.

regarding the club thing , i already am a member of such a club where a few del pg'ites are helped by an IIFTian who has a very novel way of making learn new words easy for us. nebody else is welcome to join .

adios.
