HoW to attempt or aproach RC/VA to get 30+

Hi all ,
i feels with few days to cat let us sit down to make strategies . i am following with a forum so that we can discuss how to climb hill in VA/RC. since , i fells this is one of the important section to score and along with DI determines overall score . I am talking in general there are guys which r very good in maths and ens up 25 30 in quant . but that is not the point . myself with engineering back ground so i have always beenin touchwith maths .
but i started my prep with eng and i feels it pays divident .

I would suggest don't go with a target score when u appear for CAT
last year VA+RC was easy so 30 was very much on but that might not be the case this year
just try to maximise ur score in each section by gauging the difficulty level of the paper i would suggest following

di tough-18-19 moderate 22-23 easy 25-27
EU/RC tough 22-24 moderate 25-28 easy 29-31
QA tough 14-16 moderate 18-20 easy - this wouldn't happen

I came to this conclusion after analysing past year CAT papers

Unlike other sections i dont think that there is some special way to score in VA/RC...
People good in english invariably score heavily...just optimize how you go about attempting the paper...do you attempt jumbled sentences in the first go? how do you decide which jumbled sentences not to attempt? how do you go abt rc? uestions first or read first? which type of rc's ur comfortable/uncomfortable...in short building your vocab skills wont pay off much now...whats important is to know your limits and not give it more time than required.

I m doing really bad in VA/RC. In a three section AIMCAT, my score is arround 11-12. I m not at all sure how to do well in this section.

Hi,

I agree that verbal section cannot be cracked with any definite strategy. You need to have a good vocab. to be able to do good.

I have observed one thing through some of the mock exams I have taken - Elimination technique often works well in VA. However, it also requires an above average vocab.

About RC, I think that one must be very careful while selecting the passage. Looking at the questiond first really helps. One must select a passage has more of direct questions. Because, at least with me, in case of indirect questions, it happens always that more than one alternatives appear correct. Tickmarking important parts of a passage while reading it also helps.

hey,

2 questions first
what is ur normal score in the mock cats u took?
how do u feel generally about ur reading speed?


If you are already scoring in region of 25 + then look at increasing it to 30
If ur reading speed is excellent then strategy is

initially u will be jittery : go for simple pure verbal questions
3 min 5 cos ( chances are 4 correct 1 wrong or 3 c 2 w .. net 2.33 gen)
rearragements ... 1 min per ques ... ( only if ur good at this go thsi way or do this at hte end )
then 20-25 min diirectly at RC 's ( min 25 qos will be ther)...
2 strategies :
read very fast once
look at questions
look for answers

else
look at ques .. and then read

find out ur comfort level with each strategy
rest of time ..try to max marks in verbal section

should be able to clear 30

another strategy is to attack verbal completely and the rest of time go for RC ..this works for ppl with strong verbal skills
But for that great score a strong reading speed and RC performance makes the difference

I did well in english in 512 with a net 27,
but i gave 50 mins to it....thats my pbm...my reading speed is very bad even though my accuracy is pretty good......also many times my concentration is not there....iam so easily distracted and not able to focus on the central idea.....i really need to correct this.....

I did 37 attempts in the VA/RC section of simcat- 3, but realised that I could have done five more questions, but all of these were vocab based questions (odd-man out types)... they require very less time.....but since i was unsure of there meanings, i had to leave them. Is there any "logic" in tackling these types of vocab-based problems??

What's the likely cut-off for Verbal. How much was it the last time. Any range for the previous cut-offs in Verbal....I'm weak in this part so just want to cross the cut-off in this one and maximise in the other sections.

Since this forum is started by me and Although i am as good but i am taking initiative and will try to put answers to as many doubts or questions as possible .


Is there any "logic" in tackling these types of vocab-based problems??

what i feels is that good vocab is the key for these type of questions .Sometimes elimination also works .suppose u know 2 and third is agains the two then answer is that 3.
but even for good elimination it is arround 75% guess (3 out of 4 correct ) but they are not as that commanding .

try That at a time when u are best concentrated . may be in begning of test . try to start with a passage of ur background . e.g. being an engineer i love science/technology passages.

Hi Nitin,
what i can say is keep watching this forum .
strategy
next time say to yourself that u will attempt 20 -22 questions.
start with ur best performing area VA or RC and score with 90 % acurracy
do nt attempt questions witch u feels u dont understand by below 50 %.

i am sure u will end up getting 15+ work and improve slowly .
