10 Words a day..!! -
09-03-2009, 09:16 AM
"You should have a word bank of x no. of words till the D-day day " et al is one the advices which the CAT aspirants get from the veterans. But what if we some how manage to reach the target of the so called "x" no. of words by mugging them up or so still don't know its different applications??
This thread is meant for the same.
How this thread will work:
--> The two Editorials of The Hindu will be posted on daily basis.
--> Atleast 10 words 5-5 each from both the articles will be posted with their meaning.
--> Those puys who want to participate will write 10 sentence , one on each word.
--> We can have discussion on its various usage and preposition etc associated with it.
--> We will have +10 words everyday in our word bank..!!

I-Recovering cultural properties
Laws forbid trafficking in cultural objects but the practice continues. A few months ago, 3000-year-old Assyrian earrings surreptitiously landed in the New York antiquities market. Iraqi authorities had to step in to stop the auction. However, the results were not the same when the Chinese government and concerned organisations tried to stop the sale of two priceless bronze pieces in Paris recently. The antiquities were part of the Zodiac fountain belonging to the Beijing Summer Palace, which was pillaged by the Anglo-French troops in 1860. The auction house and a Paris court refused to stop the sale. The excuse in this case was that in the past the Chinese government and citizens participated in comparable auctions to recover the antiquities. The fact that they did so in the past only after registering their protest was overlooked. To demand that the claimant nations, mostly victims of colonial depredations, should pay for recovering stolen cultural objects is ethically dubious. The UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property is, unfortunately, not helpful where the events had taken place before 1970 — the year the convention was adopted.
Arguments that the restitution of stolen antiquities must be time-bound overlook the inequalities in the infrastructure of protection. Many countries do not even have a complete inventory of their antiquities and they are often young nation states trying to recover the cultural properties lost during a colonial past. From an ethical standpoint, time cannot be allowed to smother the truth. Until legal frameworks and enforcement are tightened, there will be reliance on private collectors and governments returning cultural treasures either on their own or through persuasion. In 2003, the private collectors of Edinburgh returned their collection of human remains, removed 100 years ago, to the Ngarrindjeri people of South Australia. The Berlin Volkerkunde Museum returned portions of the sacred stone bird to Zimbabwe on a “permanent loan.” The case where cultural objects were legitimately obtained and the provenance is established, such as Mahatma Gandhi’s memorabilia, which were auctioned last week, is complex. There is not much the state can do in such instances except to encourage their return to their places of origin where they have “fundamental significance.” The state can provide incentives to encourage private participation in recovering cultural objects. However, such incentives should come with the stipulation that antiquities should be made accessible to the researchers and public alike.

II-Another success for missile shield
On Friday, a missile fired from a naval ship stationed some 150 km off the Orissa coast simulated an enemy nuclear attack such as by Pakistan’s Ghauri missile. The ‘enemy’ missile was quickly picked up on radar and a two-stage Prithvi Air Defence missile promptly despatched. The Prithvi swiftly intercepted and successfully blew up the warhead. It was the third test of the ballistic missile defence shield being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. A ballistic missile defence system is complex and highly automated, comprising radars that can detect missiles in flight, interceptors that can take out the looming threat, and control systems that can reliably coordinate the whole operation. The fact that all the three tests have been successful speaks well for the high level of technical competence that the DRDO has been able to build up in this demanding field. In the first test that was carried out in November 2006, a Prithvi Air Defence missile zeroed in on another Prithvi that played the role of attacker and destroyed it at an altitude of about 50 km. In the December 2007 test, a new Advanced Air Defence missile knocked out a modified Prithvi acting as an incoming ballistic missile at an altitude of 15 km. In the latest test, the Prithvi Air Defence missile carried out the interception at an altitude of about 80 km. The higher altitude of interception would reduce the risk of any radioactive debris reaching the ground.
The three successful tests of the indigenous ballistic missile shield must also be seen in the context of reports that the United States wants to sell India its Patriot Advanced Capability 3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defence systems, which together are intended to provide protective cover against ballistic missiles. India needs to be wary of such wholesale purchases. It is one thing to buy Israeli and French radars for use as part of the indigenous ballistic missile defence system. Importing the whole system is quite another. The latter option would undoubtedly demoralise the DRDO’s team of scientists and engineers, and the technical capability that has been so painstakingly built up would inevitably wither away. Moreover, the country would be completely dependent on the U.S. for any further improvements to the system. But no missile shield, Indian or foreign, will prove impenetrable if a barrage of missiles is launched, which is quite likely to happen in an actual war scenario. Nor would it be of any use against acts of nuclear terrorism. There is therefore no doubt that long-term security for India and the rest of this vast sub-continent lies in lowering tensions, however arduous the path to that goal may be.
Words:
1) Promptly : In a prompt manner,without delay.
2) Indigenous : Native,inborn,existing.
3) Wary : Careful, cautious.
4) Arduous : Demanding great effort or labour;difficult, hard.

I understand your intention is good and genuine but as of now we have a thread for "Words", builiding vocab and then editorials as well.
Dont see this adding value to this section. Hence, locking it.
In case you feel otherwise, feel free to PM me and we can have a discussion about it.
