Hi.
Almost all RCs in CAT are very difficult to comprehend and even IMS and TIME come with different answers for some questions . So , how far reading speed will help on the D Day . Should we concentrate more on comprehending the passage instead of racing through lines ??

Hey guys.

I have one simple advice. Dont do anything that will impair ur reading abilities.
In an effort to read faster, I learnt a few techniques. They did help me read really fast. But I was not getting the beauty of the paragraphs or the stories.
What I was left with was an overall understanding of the para. I had to spend some time detoxifying myself of these habits.

CAT requires one to read at a reasonable speed with very high levels of understanding.A speed of 400 is really good for CAT. So the focus should be on understanding it in one reading and not having to go back to the paragraph.

Vocab is an ongoing process.Try completing Word Power Made Easy in 1 month. After doing that we can go on building our wordlist. Try to look a word up in the dictionary and not give our own interpretation to it whenever we come across new words. A person with average reading habits comes across atleast 20-30 new words on a daily basis.Dont ignore any new words. With little effort one can build a great vocabulary in the next three months.
This is far better than mugging up those word lists.

One good Magazine a week along with everyday editorials is more than enough.

Cheers.

To improve your Vocab Mnemonics approach for learning words can help you a lot...Mnemonics involves linking words and meanings with some information that is already available in our long term memory. This techniques works in amazing ways, particularly when you're trying to cram a lot of words into your memory.

Mnemonic Dictionary - Fun and easy way to build your vocabulary! is a good point to start learning words using Mnemonics (also called memory aids)

To everyone of you....

Sir i wanna ask that i started BARRON 3500 word list and comfortably getting grab of it.

But everyone suggest me novels which were increasing my vocab but very slowly .

But after reading barronn, when i see barron words in the novel , i came to recognise them and it get etched into my heart fr evr... Does this strategy is wrong or is it mugging ??

Hi Mayank,

First of all this is not mugging, this is just a learning. And my take is knowing meaning is ok and great and not everybody can do it and it can be helpful to you in many exams. But CAT requires you to know different usage of words not exactly the meaning. So reading will help you in understanding, that in how many different ways a word can be used.

So keep reading, you will see the difference.

Thanx.

Re: how to improve in English RC and Vocab for CAT - 05-09-2008, 04:04 PM

ok i have a rather 'common' problem , but unable to sort it out.it concerns RC's.
when i started writing mocks(initial mock season) and when i used to practice at home , i used to have pretty high accuracy rates and invariably ,decent scores.
but of late my accuracy has gone for a toss.
wat i tried to do- 1. took a break .....
2. then went back to work ,relentlessly solved RC's but of no avail
with CAT just 2 months away, im at my wits end.
any remedies?
