option (D)

reason:remove the phrase interspersed between the commas, and,A,B,C eliminated.
amongst D and E,one glance and you know,E is not good.

I'll appreciate if you also explain why other choices are discarded.

btw, here is just another version ...

we are comparing actions and hence as is preferred

(A) similar to the way human beings breathe [similar – is used to check the similarity between two things – eliminate it]
(B) similarly to human beings who are breathing [ similarly creates run-on – eliminate it]
(C) just like the breathing of human beings [ like is used to compare two nouns – eliminate it]
(D) as human beings when breathing [Hold it]
(E) just as human beings do when they breathe [Hold it]

Between D and E – “as” is used for clauses – but D has no verb

Answer: E

share your explanation as well ....lets us know how did you break it

feel free to post

thanks

i do not quite understand why two nouns can't be compared with 'like'
Is it incorrect to say
Delhi is like Mumbai in the sense that both are bustling metros.

Please clarify.

ps. Please explain more clearly why two nouns can't be compared by 'like'

thanks

Like Vs AS

Like - used to compare two nouns.

e.g

Incorrect - Gita and Sita, as their mother Reema, are extremely smart.
Correct - Gita and Sita, like their mother Reema, are extremely smart.

As - used to compare two clauses. (A clause is a phrase that includes a verb).

Incorrect - Just like swimming is good exercise, running is a way to burn calories.
Correct - Just as swimming is good exercise, running is a way to burn calories.
