VA Resources - 02-05-2004, 04:37 PM

I was just wondering that in the initial stages of the CAT prep - what materials to use for VA. There's loads for QA, but for VA, there seems to be a dearth of material - barring the BRMs of course.

It'd be a little too early to practise VA using old test papers, dont u think? Right now, I am doing vocab by the "Word Power Made easy" by Norman Lewis and then I intend to start off with the BRMs from IMS. But from the look of it, the BRMs just explain the concept and do not give sufficient exercises.

What materials are u guys using for ur VA prep?

I just found a good book for VA. It doesnt cover all of the kinds of Qs that can be asked, but it is quite good.

It is "Advanced English Grammar" by Martin Hewings. Published by Cambridge University Press.

It will help greatly for fill in the blanks and sentence correction. It has brief explanation and is followed by extensive exercises. I find Wren and Martin too pedantic but this one is more tailored for CAT prep - that's imo.

Hi guys......
I feel that prepn for VA should start with WORD POWER MADE EASY by Norman Lewis and brushing up basics about grammer and english usage; and this must begin atleast an year before CAT. Go through WPME again n again till all the words become an integral part of ur conscience and vocab. Go through newspaper and magzines regularly, keep ur mind open and try to discover as many new words as possible. Then you can switch over to SIX WEEKS TO WORDS OF POWER by Wilfred Funk. This will further enrich your vocab. I think going through these gives you a sound base. Besides wordlist in HOW TO PREPARE FOR CAT by Muhammad Muneer is also pretty good. I think these sources will equip you with sufficient ammu to crack VA awa RC in CAT .

Thanks for that catalytic. However, since the Qs are "correct the sentences", it would be better if you can upload the word format of these Qs (so that underlining is intact). In the current text versions, the underlining has been lost. Or maybe you can just post the URLs from where you obtained these questions.
