Wren & Martin Doubts - 21-05-2008, 11:08 AM

Hi,
As we all are thriving to do our best in our lives either by preparing for CAT, GMAT, GRE or for any other Management stuffs, we do come across Wren & Martin in some way or the other since I consider this book some what equivalent to Bible of grammar in not equal for all of us.
I felt there should be some thread dedicated for clearing our doubts in any, anyone has in regard to this book.
This will be irrelevant whether one is into CAT or GRE or GMAT or some one is in gurgaon or mumbai or kashmir or in US...so this will be helpful to each and everyone.
Waiting for you all PG'ites response in this regard soon. Come on

People generally refer to Wren & Martin when they have doubts regarding to grammar

I wonder what could be the doubts that one could have with respect to Wren and Martin itself. Anyway lets see how this thread progresses

Well I might not have stated in detail the purpose of this thread. But let me explain now what made me thought of creating this thread. Firstly, the exercises which are given in Wren & Martin do not have any answers so wht I do is I refer to the key which I bought for the same. But there are times when I doubt the answer for it so thought of discussing over here. Secondly, today morning itself while going through the The Infinitive I was not able to get hold of what exactly is this or the infinite verb in other words. Lastly as for now I wanted to certain clauses so that I can get hold of it with confidence.

This is up from my side. Now what ur opinion about it nikhil. I request you to let me know if I in the above stated goal this thread will be helpful in some way.

Sounds good enough..

Start posting specific queries so that the VA people in the forum can answer them and this thread gets a proper direction

Let the public decide. If you get good response then thread survives else it dies a natural death.

May I suggest a good strategy! Why don't you start by posting your query to make the purpose of the thread clear. May be it will spark some discussion

P.S.: I have never touched wren & Martin and don't intent to do it in near future

Re: Wren & Martin Doubts - 22-05-2008, 02:25 PM

Hi,
Here comes my first problem which I was not able to get hold of The Infinitive.
"
1) They always find fault with me.
2) They always try to find fault with me.

In sentence 1, the verb find has they for its subject; hence the verb find is limited by person & number. We therefore call it a finite verb.

In sentence 2, to find merely names the action denoted by the verb find, and is used without mentioning any subject. It is therefore, not limited by person & number as a verb that has a subject, and is, therefore called the verb Infinite, or simply the Infinitive.
"

Could anyone please explain to mean what is being said above .

I tried to find this text in my WNM but I did not find it. I think I have new one.

As far as meaning of this text concerns It says that in sentence 1 the verb has a finite subject. In sentence2 verb find has no finite subject. so infinitive.

But the gist of this chapter I understand is that "verb can be used as noun using "To" sometimes it is subject and sometimes it's object and may be other part of speech."

Great Thread

Will dig out all my doubts from my Wren and Martin after the doubts forced me to dump the book
