You are younger, so I'll help you with some stuff that I should have done but didn't.
a) Read more. Newspapers, books, magazines, anything keep reading. No knowledge is useless.
b) Keep a small diary. Buy a pen and a diary, note down tough words that don't make sense, see how people use some words. I don't have to know the exact meaning of exemplary to know what it would mean in a sentence. eg. His exemplary achievements in the field of English Literature is what earned Shakespeare much praise. That's not true, he just wrote damn good but whatever you get the idea..
c) Read a variety of things to gain knowledge. Don't just stick to normal newspapers, go read blogs, small tales, Harry Potter anything you can to get you a diverse and rich vocabulary.
d) Concentrate on good spelling consciously and learn to correct your mistakes without sounding hurt. There are people that do know more than you and will catch you as you make mistakes so listen more attentively and don't start up with "Abey teri to" emotion.
e) Practice. Only way to do anything in life, practice using a word and see it used in different ways.
You can also subscribe to Doctor Dictionary that send you a word a day in the email. With good stuff in it too! ------------------------------------------ My personal website and blog :- www.kgopal.com | | | | | The Following 4 Users Say Thank You to kageman For This Useful Post:

Steps to improve your grammar
1. Purchase a good grammar book like say wren and martin. Go through this book and complete the exercises given.
2. Read about grammar rules on your own. Strunk and White’s “The Elements of Style” is the classic book on the subject, but professional writers are also fond of “Working with Words” and “When Words Collide.” Other good options include “Woe is I” by Patricia T. O’Conner and Bill Walsh’s two funny books, “The Elephants of Style” and “Lapsing into a Comma.”
3. Read a lot of books and magazines. People who understand grammar can usually tell when something sounds “wrong” without thinking about the nitty-gritty rules. Reading will help you pick up that skill by exposing you to the English language used properly.
4. It takes a lot of practice to acquire good grammar habits, so use correct grammar in every situation, even the most casual e-mail or text message to a friend. Never send a message without proofreading it, and keep your favorite grammar book nearby to look things up when you’re unsure.
Follow these rules and have super duper grammar skills "One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self- confidence is preparation." | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to targetcat2008 For This Useful Post:

I'm going to appear in CAT-08, but my sentence correction & verbal ability( particularly fact, inference, judgement ) are not up to the mark . Can you suggest me any suitable methods or practises by which I can improve upon these areas

Gather their soluns in one single file
Then try to see how those questions are framed and try to classify them if they have certain common way of structuring these statements and mark them with different numbers or colors that these are almost of same type and syntax and have almost similar answers.
You may not get all the answers but u will not surely loose all the answers and should be able to score fairly in this section.
Hope it is of some help : Is an Achievement. Defeat: a new Benchmark for another Victory. K J Somaiya (2008-10)

Buddy, Nobody's Fact-Inference-Judgement are ever correct
On a serious note, U just have 6 months left for CAT. So, "regular reading" advice is not for u. Here are some things you may do:
1. Read editorial of any good newspaper. I know it sounds cliche, but it helps. Just reading won't help though. For every paragraph you read:
i. Try guessing contextual meaning of any new word
ii. Notice the sentence structures and how the sentences are framed
iii. Try to make a summary of each paragraph and the piece as a whole.
2. Read one novel every month. It should neither be of the types "five point someone" nor heavy like "the fountainhead". Read light novels like grisham, sheldon, archer etc etc.
3. Practice. Practice and Practice some more. There is absolutely no substitute for this. Practice sentence correction, para jumbles, CR, FIJs...In the beginning, you may get things all wrong...but take it as my word, if u practice regularly, you sure will improve.
Hope it helped. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to sb29 For This Useful Post:

do go through the editorial of hindu on a daily basis. you'll come across certain words whose meaning you wont be able to comprehend. underline those words , look up its meaning in the dictionary.
once you have done that , try constructing sentences (using that word) on your own (try forming some 3-4 sentences) . once you've done that , read that particular editorial once again.
you do this , and i guar-an-dam-tee , you wont forget the meaning of those words in your lifetime
do this over a period of 3-4 months (or probably till the end of cat) and just see how your english shapes up.
wishing you all the best in whatever you do.
cheers n regards By the grace of God , Born a Devil!
