medulla-Grammar1-4/7/2008-pg57-Answers - 05-07-2008, 09:58 PM

Hi Puys,

Very few answers...
But its ok...
I think I will post five questions from now onwards.. Ten questions...looks scary..

Ok..
So answers are:
  1. How long have you been living in this city? ( because it refers to something that is that began in the past and is still going on)
  2. The company did very well in sales this year. ('wise' is never used as a suffix after 'sales'.)
  3. The first few chapters of the book are rather heavily going, but the pace gradually picks up. ( 'heavy going' is the idiom used to refer to a book. 'go rather heavily ' not correct)
  4. She definitely possesses a much more distinctive personality than her sister. (we cannot use 'much more' with 'unique')
  5. I found it very difficult to do my work, for I was continually interrupted by the telephone. ('Continually' means 'again and again';, whereas 'continuouly' means 'without stopping')
  6. So under many state laws, everything, from name-calling, controlling the household finances, and even making certin facial expressions, now qualifies as abuse. (because og everything in the statement)
  7. As regards your recommendations about the upcoming project, we plan to act on them soon. (the idiom is "as regards")
  8. The reason I cried is that I was frustrated.('Because' is never used after 'reason')
  9. Medha says an increasing number of pet owners are looking to their employers to provide this as a benefit available with a group discount, even though they pay the entire cost on their own. ('looking to' means 'to expect or plan to do something' whereas 'looking up to' means 'tp admire or respect someone')
  10. I am talking about the condition of politics in India and you are going off on a tangent. ('on' preposition is used here and not 'at')
Puys... Some more questions are coming soon...

Hi Puys...

Try following grammar questions...
I am posting only five questions. Every statement has something wrong in it. Correct the statement. Please post the explanation.

Correct the following statements:
  1. Recently, the Reserver Bank of India probe had found that in several cases, refund money was credited directly into the broker's accounts.
  2. While computer viruses, which are broad-based and largely senseless attacks, are still common many hacker groups now zero down on particular companies or types of data.
  3. John is the actor who everyone loves to talk about.
  4. The two young men were surprised to learn that neither was their father's sole heir.
  5. Everyone cried untill the play was over, and then he got up and left.
All The best...
I will post answers tomorrow evening.. (as everyone would be busy today in mock cat analysis)
