Which one of the above statements is correct ?? |
phew !! just woke up in time for cat'08 ! Well according to me- both statements need to be continued further but my grammar tells me - 'that' gives very specific information about a person/object where as which even removed from the sentence would not alter the meaning of the sentence
Say the sentence was :
the bible that was published in 1800 is up for sale,
specifically the one in 1800 is being sold , the whole idea of 'that' being used here is to grab specific information by 'that'
the bible which was published in 1800 is up for sale
here even if 'which' was omitted ,you would know that bible is up for sale
and the omitted part " which was published in 1800" only gives additional information and not mandatory to the sentence
note : which preceded by comma in most cases should refer to inanimate objects ,also it refers to the word immediately preceding it.
Thanks!
