reasoning was simple
although and 'and that book' don't come in the same sentence.
options A and B eliminated
now, here, the semicolon comes into the picture when, the first part itself is sufficient as a sentence;and the second part is an 'adjective' to the first part.as although is used,we have to complete the sentence using a comma and not a semi-colon.so,option (C) fits the bill.
hope i am correct with the reasoning as well

try this..
Due to the fact that Jordan wrecked Bono's station wagon during a road trip last summer, she has not been and probably never would be allowed to drive her father's car.
(A) has not been and probably never would be allowed to drive
(B) has not been allowed to drive and probably never will be allowed to drive
(C) has not and probably never would be allowed to drive
(D) has not and probably will never be allowed to drive
(E) has not and probably never will be allowed to drive
OA is B

my take
option (B)
reason:here,"has not.........will/would be able to drive" should make a correct sentence.none of the options A,C,D,E satisfy this.B is long, but looks good

Re: Sentence Correction for CAT 2008 -

Try this...
Jennifer: Video rental outlets in Centerville together handled 10,000 fewer video rentals in 1994 than in 1993. The decline in rentals was probably due almost entirely to the February 1994 opening of Videorama, the first and only video rental outlet in the area that, in addition to renting videos, also sold them cheaply.
Brad: There must be another explanation: as you yourself said, the decline was on the order of 10,000 rentals. Yet Videorama sold only 4,000 videos in 1994.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the force of the objection that Brad presents to Jennifer's explanation?
(A) In 1994 Videorama rented out more videos than it sold.
(B) In 1994 two new outlets that rent but that do not sell videos opened in Centerville.
(C) Most of the video rental outlets in Centerville rent videos at a discount on certain nights of the week.
(D) People often buy videos of movies that they have previously seen in a theater.
(E) People who own videos frequently loan them to their friends.
by the way,
Brad: There must be another explanation: as you yourself said, the decline was on the order of 10,000 rentals. Yet Videorama sold only 4,000 videos in 1994.
Do you get Brad's comment ?
10,000 vs 4,000 whats the connection he is trying to prove ?
I have messed it up somehow .
comments ?

My take option E
Decline of the order of 10,000 in rentals can be accounted for by the fact that even if only 4000 are being sold , people loan them to their friends , which adds up to 4000 to make for the decline in numbers.

my take
option (E)
option A states, that, more videos were rented, which contradict the given data.option B,even,if outlets increase, the number of videos rented will remain same.C same reasoning.D does not say anything which contradicts the 4000 thing/constraint.so,E looks good.
regarding your question, the fall in video rentals was 10000.it was entirely due to videorama.the characteristic of videorama is that,it 'sells' the videos.so,selling has to be around 10000 to explain the first statement.that is what is challenged.
hope that helps.

See the question ,
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the force of the objection that Brad presents to Jennifer's explanation?
it seems to me that Brad does not want to blame Videorama for the decine in rental . he is blaming for other reason.
So, we need to find a choice which could show us that all this mess is due to Videoram...because the question asks "most seriously weaken the force of the objection that Brad presents to Jennifer's explanation"
is not it the correct interpretation of the question ?
so , even if Videoram sold only 4000 video , because of E , friends will borrow the DVD and watch the video ...they will not go for rental any more . this way INDIRECTLY the video rental declines.
this is just my understanding.
comments/defends please.
OA is E by the way
A fails to explain the 10,000 drop in figure.
B also cant explain the decline in rental
C looks interesting ....but certain nights ,weeks ..discount .there is no explanation for the decline.
D. nonsense
E looks good.
comments/defends please.

Couldn't agree with you more on this...Jeniffer is attributing the decline in video rentals to the opening of Videorama, while Brad doesn't think so.
So the answer should be something which reinforces Jeniffer's argument.
Only (E) seems to fit the bill...
Hope is a good thing, may be the best of things, and no good thing ever dies..

exactly. ...so Jeniffer is accusing that because of Videorama , there is a decline .
Brad defends , he is thinking there could be some other cause.
we need to find a choice which reinforce Jeniffer's argument and weaken the objection of Brad
