1) 1.. the use of 'not only because' has to be followed by 'but also because'
2) 2 (in 1 the use of 'these' is erroneous)

1)1
the corrected sentence startin with 'but also' is out of question!...we already hav one in the latter part of the sentence.
2)2
if u skip 'in physics' after n before two consecutive commas...the sentence still makes sense...which is not the case in any of the other options which have 'those' in them.

medulla-SC1-28.8.2008-pg126-Answers -

1.
The probability which is the guide of life is not the mathematical kind, not only because it is not relative to arbitrary data, but to all data that bear on the question at issue, but also because it has to take account of something which lies wholly outside the province of mathematical probability.
- but to all data that bear on the question at issue, but
- but also to all data bearing on the question at issue, and
- but also to all data that bear on the question at issue, and
- but also to all data that bear the question at issue, and
Explanation -
The original option is correct. As a rule for correlative conjunction pairs, "not only" has to be followed by "but also" and the parts of the sentence following them have to have parallel construction. All the remaining options violate this rule.
2.
My space and time, as known in perception, are correlated with these that, in physics, are appropriate to axes that move with my body.
- are correlated with these that, in physics, are appropriate to axes that
- are correlated with those that, in physics, are appropriate to axes that
- are correlated with those, that in physics, are appropriate to axes, that
- are correlated with those that, in physics, being appropriate to axes which
Explanation -
Option (2) serves the best phrasing of the underlined part. Option (1) incorrectly uses "these", option (3) has misplaced punctuation marks (commas) and option (4) incorrectly uses "being". Hence, option (2) is the correct answer.
