My English teacher always told me that the best way to improve spoken English is to communicate with others. You say that you don't get opportunity to speak in English. Well thats the problem actually most of us face as it isn't our native language. But as is said, Practise makes a man perfect. If you don't try speaking with other people, improvement will be slow.

There's always one person with whom you can talk in english. YOURSELF. Try doing that. It works. Atleast in my case it did. Even I don't have too many friends with whom I can talk in english, so i resorted to this option. It took as much as 6 months, but its working. I followed one simple but demanding rule. At any point of time either I am speaking (in hindi) or I am thinking (in english) about bloody anything. You can start off by elucidating a joke or any incident (in case you don't have much to think about). However, if you think you are not able to speak in english simply because you go nervous in public, then simply harbour the I-dont-give-a-damn attitude. It works.

Re: English Speaking Trouble - 11-02-2008, 05:10 PM

ya we can speak in englsh with ourself.I agree
It helps a lot....I agree
it helps in ovecoming hesitation to some extent..

but the problem is that while tallking to oneself we dont know whether we are
using right grammer or not?
for example you may find lots of grammer mistakes within this post.....And if nobody will tell me about my grammer mistakes then i ll use the same sentence again....

In my opininon if there is some one to correct you ,then the we can learn better english
in short span of time.....

So do any body knows any such helper(tutor) in Bangalore..

any help will be highly appreciated...

thanks a ton in advance...

well.......feature this, my acads are very avg. and the avg. of my 10th, 12th and grad marks being 61!!!! Now my cat scores, the last time I gave it I secured 90 in verbal and this time 96. I have mentioned these scores so that you atleast appreciate my theory if not follow it. What I did was did an in depth research as to what I am lacking i.e. grammar or something else. Fortunately my grammar was well in place, and I had problems in some subtle areas like knowledge of phrasal verbs and a few other things which differentiate written english from spoken english. Now the main part, all this was this way almost three years before(yes it took so long), and since then I have been working on it, I have come a long way from there but I still don't think I am done. What I am trying to say is that there's no short cut to learning a language or any hard and fast to learn it within three months. And frankly in this world no one has the time to sit with you everyday for three hours to teach you english with complete dedication or at least as much as is required, and (if you ask me) anything less than that won't help.

Sorry for taking two minutes of your life but this is the truth and I sincerely hope this helps.......

Buddy even if you have people to talk to in English...you won't find them correcting your sentences

best bet - buy a full length mirror and start spending an hr daily in front of it...obviously speaking at yourself...speak out...speak out loud and clear (i know a full length mirror can be put to much better use )

hey... from what i can see from your post, your english doesn't seem that horrible... so just chill and like its been said earlier, talk to yourself in front of a mirror.. And watch a lot of english news channel and pick up their pronounciations.... however this is just a personal opinion///

That smugness of yours really is an attractive quality.

Thank you. It was either that or get my hair highlighted. Smugness is easier to maintain.

Well, like the philosopher Jagger once said, 'You can’t always get what you want

Thanks polpot for a quick reply...

I dont find written communication a tough task. I guess this is the case with most of the guys.
The problem comes when we start to talking and the tongue doesnt support. I think the only way to overcome this is to talk or talk.

Thanks for your suggestions.. I will try to follow them honestly..

Smile Re: English Speaking Trouble - 13-02-2008, 02:52 PM

hi all,
a small suggestion which i myself found very useful.

i am not aware whether the institutes which offer spoken English improvement courses, are really useful to what extent.
if one's not able to go to any such institute, then one must try reading something loud (obviously not so loud that the neighbors get panicked ).
suppose if one reads newspaper daily, then at least 2-3 articles must be read out loud. it will take quite a long time as compared to silent reading but after a week or so one will find fluency in the speech very effectively.

rest, practice makes a man perfect...
