I marked A. Correct answer is D.

There is one conceptual error in A. It says, the number .... have, which is wrong. The correct option should have, the number ... has. Agreed.

But, the moment I saw options C, D and E using ( : ), I marked them as incorrect. Why?

Colon, : , is used to seperate 2 parts of a sentence. Most often, to equate a list with it components. You should be able to replace : with namely.

Otherwise, I agree option D is correct, but the colon?

What say?

9. The results of the company’s cost-cutting measures are evident in its profits, which increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it fell over the last two years.
(A) which increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it fell(B) which had increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it had fallen(C) which have increased five percent during the first three months of this year after falling(D) with a five percent increase during the first three months of this year after falling(E) with a five percent increase during the first three months of this year after having fallen

The answer is C but what is wrong with A

The profits are being talked about which is plural and we can't use 'it' for profits....

here's my take on this:
all the options except E say--
"lions playing in trees without the aid of telephoto lenses."

the part- without the aid of telephoto lenses- has been placed wrongly here...
(as why would lions need lenses )

i hope you get it!
