Thread for Deleted Sentences - 08-09-2006, 12:03 PM

hi puys
Can everyone please post VA questions of the type
'Find the appropriate sentence from the options which has been deleted from the given para'....
Especially the tough ones i.e. 2 markers .... i find them very confusing and often end up messing up with the Questions...... :(

Re: Thread for Deleted Sentences - 09-09-2006, 06:00 PM

Okay, I'll begin.. The following is a 1 marker:

1. Athletes who carry one type of a well-known 'fitness' gene might actually push themselves so hard that they tire out their hearts. That's the finding from a study of individuals who competed in one of the most gruelling races in the world. _____________________

a. Exercise experts have long assumed that heart muscles, unlike those of our legs and arms, don't tire.
b. But a few studies of athletes have hinted that the heart also gets worn down by many hours of extreme exercise.
c. Trainers and athletes should be aware that their bodies can outstrip their hearts.
d. In theory, it might even be possible to specifically train heart muscles.

I'll post the answer later, with another question of the same kind.

HTH!

a. Exercise experts have long assumed that heart muscles, unlike those of our legs and arms, don't tire. - Method of elimination
b. But a few studies of athletes have hinted that the heart also gets worn down by many hours of extreme exercise. The 'But' here carries no sense of context.
c. Trainers and athletes should be aware that their bodies can outstrip their hearts.
Where did trainers come from?
d. In theory, it might even be possible to specifically train heart muscles.
No one's talking about training heart muscles.

Please involve explanations wherever possible...in the GMAT Official Guide ishtyle.

arre bhai tatimatla ,
aise to sab galat hai ..tumhare hisab se .... no option is correct ...

btw i go with .. (b)... as it sort of continues with the statement ... first talking abt the argument(athletes and study), followed by the evidence ..... so next cd come a contradiction . hence(b)

Correct Answer:

a. Exercise experts have long assumed that heart muscles, unlike those of our legs and arms, don't tire.

Explanation in the answer book:

The paragraph highlights a new finding and option a. completes the paragraph best as it compares it to the earlier view of the experts on the tiring of heart muscles.

The logic I used:

I got this correct in the paper so I can tell you my approach. Options c. & d. are out because as tatimatla pointed out - they have little or no connection to the para. Between a. & b., option a. makes much better ending to the paragraph, as it is talking about a previous thought process which is refuted by the new research.
Also, in my opinion, going for an option which supports and/or talks about previous issues of the paragraph, instead of an option that contradicts it - is a safer bet in being accurate. (This is a personal opinion; we will see if I'm correct as we proceed with more Qs & As).

2. Management and leadership are two words that are considered synonymous but describe two different concepts. According to the dictionary, management is the act, manner or practice of managing; handling, supervision, or control; leadership is the capacity or ability to lead. ________________________________

a. Essentially, management is "the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals".
b. Not only that, management is a theory and a way of doing business.
c. In many organizations, management is a job description; leadership is a positive trait.
d. For an organization to be successful, management should be exercised cautiously.
