change the sentence to "Stories of animals' fascinate children". The apostrophe makes it a possesive noun, which is ok
it would be gramatically right, but then why go for such a weird sentence anyway

otherwise... the better part of valour is discretion..so i wont comment

I think neither answers are right as they are in passive form.

The right one would also need to be clear and concise. Try beating:

"Children are fascinated by stories about animals"

One of the best ways to learn words is by getting a hang of the etymology.Of late, have developed a keen interest in word origins but using the dictionary is proving to be cumbersome...the dictionary is quite heavy!:razz:Also, going through the dictionary sequentially and finding out the word origin gets a bit boring, rather quite boring in my case.Is there any good book which is exclusively devoted to "Etymology"?
Suggestions are welcome!

Cheers!!!

P.S. Can we keep the "good job" and "great work" posts away from this thread?Imagine what will happen if everybody starts appreciating the good work being done here!!

I would suggest you guys to install google deskbar (deskbar.google.com) and type in words and hit a control T which opens up a thesaurus. This is a really cool thing that I use all the time (a lot better than wordweb or whatever it is). Whenever I feel that I want to have a larger repetoire of words or even do a simple spell check (infact just checked the spelling of repertoire and corrected it )

Remember that no one is a genius when it comes to word. Remembering a word is purely a function of usage. Try to use better substitutes and you will realize that over a period of time you tend to get better at coming up with appropriate words.

Re: The PG Guide to English ;) - 08-11-2005, 02:42 PM

Shrutz,
I had been doing pretty well in VA/RC in all the mocks except for the last 2 or 3...But for the past 3 mocks, I have been getting 8-15 marks less than what I used to score ...Have my VA abilities suddenly gone haywire?VA/RC being the only section I am good at, I depend on it completely to hike up my overall score. If at all, I manage to clear the Quant and DI cutoffs, I do so by a very small margin. So I just cant afford to let my VA score fall this much...I dont understand what's happening to me..Is it overconfidence or is it due to lapses of concentration? Do you think I can afford to actually spend time practising VA/RC, at this point of time, when I should be legitimately worrying about my QA/DI?

Never thought things would come to this.On top of everything else, I have to worry about VA/RC too...

Any suggestions?

Tinkerbell.
P.S: In addition to being the VA Queen, you now have the honour of being an Agony Aunt too
