Why do people drink alcohol and smoke when its bad????

Well, thtz precisely what I think, when I see scores of ppl smoking away every single day.Beats the hell out of me! Me thinks thy do it for the sheer "thrill of it (If I may say so).
" A cigarette in my hand and I feel like a man" feeling , I suppose. And when it comes to women thy also join the bandwagon, coz itz stylish

Drinking, makes more sense to me though. You want to get "high" once in a while and vent out your pent-up feelings and frustrations, I have seen numerous gals and guys taking ths route.

Jst for the record ,I dont smoke or drink, but have tried both!

the basic reason for starting to smoke and drink is to make company and don't feel falling behind your group. You see a smoker can gel with non-smoker but a non-smoker can not gel with smoker . i mean like take an example of a fag break from office, if four smoking guys take a fag break then a non-smoker ,however good friend, may not be keen on joining...

by the way a got a forwarded mail propagating the benefits of drinking in this way. In any herd, the group speed is equal to the speed of the the slowest moving animal. and ppl say that alcohol attacks brain cells. now consider all the cells, if the alcohol is attacking the brain cells of course those which are weakest are going to be killed first. thus on an overall basis the alcohol is killing the brain cells which are weak and thus increasing the overall speed of the brain. So booze and become smart!!

Why do people fall in love?


I know i am going to get some senti answers and some hate mails even some death threats(specially from ladies ) after posting this question.

But think about it.I have a huge friend circle including both sexes.I have seen many love affairs and all of them(including mine ) had similar pattern.First two people fall in love and admire each other like anything.But sooner or latter(sooner in my case ) when the honeymoon period gets over there starts a neverending battle(I like calling it lovermagaddon) where both the parties end up getting hurt.

So,Some times i really wonder that is love really that important in life.Can't two person get through life with just been friends.

Absolutely worthless thread, more so since its been started by a non-smoker & tee-totaller. I myself do both, and don't think either party (the smokers & non-smokers) could justify their actions.

If we seriously get down to discussing why people smoke and drink. Some of them are :



1. Imitate friends and try to prove they too are a part of the team. So they pick up their habits.

2. Imitate role models:

a) The first role model a person has is his/her parents and if they see them smoking and drinking then even after growing up this thought gets reinforced that their parents had no hassles smoking or drinking

b) the actor, the sports star, the model or anyone whom they like an admire. Sachin Tendulkar had once told in his interview that one wouldn’t find him endorsing smoking n drinking coz he doesn’t want to take advantage n manipulate the influence he has on his fans.

3. Some do it coz they consider it to be in. Most of the guys smoke and rink just because they feel its real masculine etc to smoke and drink.

4. Some do it because of the myth that it helps forget tensions and worries. In reality it doesn’t help you come out of your problems even for a second. It’s all in your mind.

5. Just for fun

6. Some do it because they know it harms them. They want to give an outlet to their frustration by doing so. they try to show it to someone, maybe God above that see this is how am torturing myself for treating me the way you have.



Reasons are many. I am sure we can add many more to the list. And its such a vicious circle. The more you want to come out of it the more you get trapped. Having one whole chapter on this smoking and stuff, after reading all the bad effects it has on a person even I wondered why people still smoke and drink.

ok...tell me wht's ur definition of 'bad'.....is a thingie bad by nature or is it made to look bad....wht i mean is....

-jus becoz...the cause 4 the majority of AIDS cases is a unprotected sex doesnt mean 'sex' in itself is bad....it is the way PEOPLE use it (i mean the means may not be right)moreso an unprotected one...

- and jus becoz incidents like the MMS are happenin(which in the view of most of the parents s spoilin kids ...no offence meant ...) it doest mean the technology is bad....it's the way it's being used that may be bad....

here i am not sayin tht smokin or drinkin is good...definitely it's harmful...i agree...but it's not BAD as long as it's within the limits of u know...jus tryin kinds...or jus 4 a change...U REALLY CANT BRAND A PERSON 'BAD ' IF HE/SHE SMOKES.....AND NOT EVEN SMOKING OR DRINKIN IN ITSELF....as i said...addiction of any form may not be good....NOR IS HAVING RIGID VIEWS ABOUT ANYTHING...like in this case smokin /drinkin.....itna kyon sochte ho????chill it and 4get it!! tht's the mantra 4 things tht can get too complicated at times

This is right but on the other hand cigarettes are the only product that kills when used just as intended by the manufacturers. Even booze is good for your heart in moderate quantities ( according to various studies but the amt that is considered moderate is variable)

Smoking leads to lung cancer. The smokers know it , still they go on smoking. Thats because they are addicted ; though many would like to say they are not and can quit at the drop of a hat. But unfortunately thats not true.
