Corporate social rsponsibility to earn profit - 30-05-2005, 09:42 AM

hi all those crazy heads like me . the latest in thing in the biz world seems to be CSR i.e corporate social responsibility and trying to keep the fire burining are the organisations like International Students community (ISC) a students forum. But isn't it true that in todays world if biz wants to thrive it can't put CSR in acorner . In fact just like in biz An oppurtunity lost in THIS field Will only result in loss. And CSR can be used to promote biz. Just like what Coke is doing . Sending medical kits, All the neede medicines And other medical help in the interiors of africa and side by side selling coke . Topic open for discusson

If you try to look carefully over this CSR thing, you will find that the complete concept is a bit skewed one.

Preachers of CSR claims that when ever some one reaps profit after his individual hardwork, they should repay it back to the society.
Now, all the companies earn profit after selling something and they can sell only if people buy something.
People will buy something when they WANT the product or LIKE the product.
So isn't this already a CSR by producing and providing a person things that he need.

Why should any cos. be required to give additional benefits.

My point is that all the companies are run by smart people who are aware of the above stated thing.
But still if they are following the CSR funda, then it has to be related (directly or indirectly) to their promotion.
And rightly it should be.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Well according to me this CSR thing is the latest in the list of fundoo names given to programmes or objectives which were conducted earlier in the industries too but in a smaller scale...Quite a few companies have been involved in CSR activities long before the term was devised...
The very fact that a term has been devised for all the sociallly responsible activites conducted by a company is responsible for the its growing popularity....In the public's eye a company cannot be seen as not being upto date with the latest thing as was with TQM,Six sigma etc etc....
As stated its an excellent publicity method...usually much cheaper than other standard ad campaigns...cos the publicity is given free by the newspapers who cover the CSR activities...A company always has to keep profits in its mind and ever initiative it takes on must directly or indirectly affect its business...Obviously when a layman sees that a company is involved in CSR activities it creates a sense of respect and trust in the company which again leads to increased sales ....
We at SIIB have been given a pre joining assignment to survey the CSR activites of the comapnies and i have found out that it is again directly related to increased publicity and hence increased revenues....

Alright! Alright Magicians never tell. But i will tell u what i think corporate social responsibility is... business...

profit is the sole purpose of enterprise... any money that an enterprise spends has to bring it profit possibly in the short term and most definitely in the long term...
So any enterprise spending money as per CSR unless its really negligible really has to make sure that it makes profit out of it... So it could be to improve the neighbourhoods of where most of its employees live... which will directly improve employee retention... and so on... maybe just generate public goodwill helpful for long term profits etc... Any enterprise that tries to do social work without any possible profit benefits in the long term will cease to exist sooner or later...

So obviously CSR is just business nothing more...
