Vive Le Pondicherry!

Hi y’all…..if u want to ever really know a city then walk on its streets. For some its savouring the local cuisine that gives them the “feel” of the city…for some it’s traveling via local transport. For me its walking on the streets.

Pondy is an UT with 290 sq.kms area.It has straight ,well-maintained roads. The temperature varies from 34*C to 24*C.The French occupied it from 1673.Large french mansions are sprinkled around with those french balconies where one can envisage Juliet leaning over a balustrade and Romeo straining his vocal chords to sing his way through her heart.Ofcourse, there’s the sea in its roar to lend its support.

The beach can be accesed at some points.Depending on your luck you may find hot babes in bikinis swimming.Talking about babes…ahem,Pondy is often tagged as the porn city. The residents are a mixed lot.Primo-the local public is rough and indulge a lot in local hooch. Its not a safe place for a gal after 9pm.Secundo-there are many whites now based here.Italians, frenchies, dutch, germans, british, auss ies…u name it! They could be either very refined or coarse.Tertzo-people all over India who are regular visitors(mostly Bengalis) come to visit Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville.Places that are a must!

It’s a city that contains all paradoxes…from vodkas to vedas….from pastries to prostitution.On the shopping scenario,well,look for candles,handmade stationeries,perfumes,croissants,antiques,instrume ntal cds,wind chimes,gems,offbeat t-shirts,casuals….this will do!

The theatres are pathetic…discs are almost non-existent.But if you want to hangout then there are several offbeat joints and espresso bars…You could also zoom with a rented bike(24hrs=150rs)!To get high without drugs then all you have to do is hit the ECR on a balmy night…boy!then you will know what joie de vivre truly means!

Do loose yourself in its tempo coz Pondy is sanity in the heart of madness.

If u are scared to gamble then u will never throw a six.

Hi Pensieve,

Am coming to Pondy in mid-aug.Need information .This is my itinerary. Will be real glad if you can help me:
1> Reach Chennai by flight from mumbai- 9 pm
2> Take flight back from Chennai on tue morning.
So intended stay of 3 days in Pondy.
What i want to know is how to commute to pondy from chennai and then back keeping in mind this schedule? Will i get means of transport at late night from chennai to Pondy?
or will it be better for me to spend the night in Chennai and leave early morning.
How far is train/bus station from airport?
Am Hindi-English speaking.Dont know Tamil. How much of a factor it will be ?
And any good resort/hotels in medium price range(500-1000 a day) near the beach?
Please oblige,
Rohit

Hi Rohit,
as soon as u walk out of the airport u will find buses that will take u to Pondy. So need not worry on that front.Even at late night. As far as lang is concerned...almost all folks understand and even speak it.Even the auto wallas.U will find a plethora of resorts in that range...and u need not book frm now.U can do that in 2 weeks time. But if u want near the beach then i will jus ask around and let u know. Here are few decent hotels that come to mind-"Executive Inn","Hotel Mass" and "Park Guest House"...will let u kno buddy. And hey,we cud maybe meet there...what say?Pm me if u have other queries.

Yeh hai mumbai meri jaan - 30-06-2005, 10:23 AM

I love this city. And got a fwd today which really tells us a lot about Mumbai.Do read it..

The mega polis of Mumbai holds many a challenge for the 'rookie' who
lands here unaware of the hurdles and challenges that he or she might have
to face.

A recent incident saw one such hapless victim falling prey to the
overenthusiastic nature of Bombay's local train commuters. Our hero, a man
from Pune, wanted to go to Matunga, but as luck and trains would have it,
boarded a fast train not halting at his destination. He panicked on
realising his mistake but by then the local had started moving. On seeing
his plight, a sympathetic co-passenger decided to come to his rescue. It
seemed that he had been commuting by that particular train (6:03pm Kasara
Fast) for the past 6 years and had noticed that the train always slowed
down just before Matunga station and crawled at a snail's pace while
passing through it. He told the man to jump out of the running train as it
slowed down and that with a little bit of fleet-footedness, he would make
it safely on terra firma. However, knowing the man's inexperience, he added
some words of caution:
"Keep running the moment you jump or you'll fall. Just keep running."
He stressed the word "running" lest the man not know the laws of motion.
The train did slow down just before Matunga station and at the prompting of
his mentor, our hero jumped out of the train and started running as if all
hell had broken loose. What he didn't realise, of course, was that he was
running parallel to the train instead of running away from it. Meanwhile,
the train slowed down further, so that the man was running faster than the
train. In the process, he reached the door of the next compartment and the
footboard commuters there pulled him in thinking he was trying to board the
train lifted him into the compartment! To his agony, the train picked up speed and sped past Matunga and
his new co-passengers started to congratulate him on how lucky he had been,
until he told them that they had actually undone what he had done with
great difficulty.

Those standing at the door of his "ex-compartment" had witnessed the whole
drama and just couldn't stop laughing at the poor man's situation, while he
grinned sheepishly.

Yeh hai mumbai meri jaan.... sure u've had a hearty laugh urself... now

HAHAHAHA!!

well the experience that is Mumbail Local Train travelling extends a little further.. Ever heard of the travellators installed??? Bamboozled??? Arrr.. its just the peak hour traffic in local trains wherein if u stand in the corridor of the train, and the station is approaching, u neednt even apply any force to get down. The passengers behind you will ensure this. A broken sandal/slipper might be the end result, but hey , you dont get a travellator even in London Underground..

cheers,
shalin..

cheeeeeeeeeerz,

Wat else is left 4 me to praise this wonderfull city 'Cyberabad' bout !
Well.., I must say one of the few cities in India with gr8 value for money for anything n everythin . Even the rich guys think twice b4 spending Tons of money for somethin when u can get the samethin 4 cheap somewhere else ., that actually is nice coz it kind of narrows the social gap (i donno wat term to use there ) between the rich, middle class n the poor. U can find all these classes at one place all of them havin fun at any public place !
Comin 2 chics( with all due respect..,i use it as a complimenting term ).., we got em all ! We got hot chics., cute chics , foxy chics, decent chics, padakhoo chics, ladakhoo chics.
Yeah.., the factory outlets make it so easy on all of us. Can get anythin at unbelievable prices. From wat I heard 4m friends 4m other places.., HYD must b the Capital cities of discounts ! U got discounts 4 every silly reason., summer., winter., monsoon.,clearance., blah blah.

Oh yes.., the traffic n pollution suck BIG time ! thats probably the ONLY complaint I got with this CITY.
Who doest know bout hyderabadi food. Need I say anymore ?
U can almost call Hyderbad the IT capital of India if banglore wasnt competing.
hey.., Did i Mention we have ISB ???

And to talk about the transformation Hyderabad has gone thru the past 8-10 years is amazing. This city never ceases to amaze My friends n family Everytime they come here 4m other places.
I sincerely feel Hyderbad must b called a cosmopolitan now altho I donno wat the requirements are .

Finally I must say ., I was born a hyderabadi., lived a hyderabadi and will b a Hyderabadi 4 the rest of my life !
HYDERABAD..., U ROCK !!!
