Heh Heh.....do people actually call themselves micro-softies???
Anyways.....I'm currently using Windows XP Professional edition, Windows 98 SE and PCQLinux 8.0 (based on RHL 8.0) on my triple boot system. I primarily use XP, though I have to admit that Linux is pretty cool (especially WiNe). But yeah, it's not meant for novices. I had a hard enough time creating swap partitions and stuff (bloody Anaconda doesn't do it properly) while installing it from 3 CDs. But I also had a pretty rough time getting around. Heh Heh.....I didn't even know how to mount partitions and drives! Though now I can get some stuff done, I still can't setup my LAN card for accessing the web, I can't setup my dialup modem, and it still refuses to detect my sound card. The graphics and multiple desktops are cool though.
All you Linux freaks, help me out with a problem....why doesn't my Grub recognise my Windows XP installation? It just shows 98 and Linux. Actually, by default my comp boots to XP, giving a choice between 98 and XP. If I want to run linux, I have to change the first boot device from the cmos setup! Any ideas?

I had faced similar problems with Red Hat Linux7, I used a bootable floppy. So, my comp. booted into 98/XP menu by default and I had to insert the floppy to get Linux running .
Using Linux was good fun, I was even able to access the files in Windows Partitions (by writing some code in a system file). Haven't used Linux recently, so can't really comment on the new flavours.

I havnt used linux much, was a newbie in it like u only. knew basic commands and used the GUI- XWindows, bas nothing else. Abt ur prob see if this works, get hold of LILO (Linux Loader), it will b installed in ur boot sector, if i am correct, andwhen u boot up ur sys, it gives option btw linux or Windows. Selecting Windows will take u to Win menu btw XP and 98SE. i remember u can even customise to have 98SE & XP shown along with Linux; giving whatever name u like. There wasnt much in GUI for me to enjoy it, so i left. am thinking of giving it another try wid my laptop now, since Exception bhaji is praising it so much. Else i will buy iMac
PS: What i like in this thread is that evn tho its for Win bashing, there is no dirt being thrown. Where the black patches are being exposed, the white is also appreciated. Nice thread to find replacements of Win wherein Win got u screwed up

linux is good if you know how to ./r00t :-D
Windows is good too, you should know how to configure OS before you blame them. I guess its becuase Windows has made life tooo easy for ppl. also considering that it grew rapidly there could be some bugs here and tehre...
well maybe some of you should try a ZOS :-D . Sure 90% of business runs on ZOS, but try checking your email on ZOS and it could take some JCL and some SYSINs well... (not the builtin mailing/message queue systems, but say POP3 emails).
I have win 2000, pretty nice . win98. I used linux 3 years abck , when during college days had tons of free time to ./compile and ./r00t :-D , apart from ./ing never had good use of linux box.
cheers

Well I am in IIT Bombay and we have an awesome LAN here. Last year we had a deadly attack by Blaster Worm which shook the very foundations of our network.
Administrative body then went rampant blaming windows for this tragedy and asked us to use Linux.
Now I hav both WinxP Service Pack2,(NOrton Antivirus,Sygate Firewall) and Gentoo 2000.5 as Linux.I have tried RHL9,Fedora COre 1,2,3, Suse 9.1. But I wud recommend Gentoo over all of these to those who have descent net speed cauz installation has never been so easy as in Gentoo.
Abt Windows, I use it mosty for Word Processing though Gentoo is gud enuf but I am used to WOrd.ALso Gaming WarCRaft 3,Unreal Tourney 4 ,Age of Empires,Diablo2 etc.
I will attribute lack of care and maintenance the reason why most window-ers whine abt it.
Do u
1)frequently update ur firewall?
2)Check for Windows Updates?
3)Run Admin TOols viz. Disk Defragment etc.?
If proper care is taken Windows is GUD enuf as any other OS.
Ciao.
