Well it depends a lot on your budget.
I personally am a big fan of SUVs......Honda CRV in particluar.....

Let's know your budget and we can take it from there....unlesssss...."Money is no object!!"

hav'nt yet reached the "Money is no object" stage yet
also, am not really looking for luxury... my need is simple, the vehicle should go where i dare take it... and come back one thing about upmarket SUVs, maybe just a perception, they require lots of maintenance, arent great on fuel consumption, and if you use the standard rural quality of diesel (90% kerosene, 5% diesel, 5% God knows what) in them, be prepared to replace the whole engine...
to answer your q, budget would be limited, so nothing fancy like the imported SUVs or even our very desi Tata Safari...

Then, with a "limited" budget, your options boil down to:
1. The good old Maruti Gypsy.....tried and tested......but a real pain to drive in the city......huge turning radius, parking probs.......but tough as a bull! Costs around 4 lacs I think.....
2. The Sumo Victa.......the new avatar of the Sumo.....with power steering, power windows, good air conditioning, et all......one of the best in its class at the moment....
3. The Mahindra Bolero.....a little bit expensive, but Scorpio's little sister comes with a touch of class......a good deal operall.....might be a pain in the fuel economy department though......
4. I know there are more........can't think of any right now.........will post more when I remember....let me know what you think of these options.....

My personal choice from among these 4.....Sumo Victa.....

Trivia: Does anyone know how the Sumo got its name???

isnt SUMO named after SUmant MOolgaonkar? i suppose he was the only non-Tata chairman of Tata Sons and he is supposed to have built Telco (Tata Motors) to what it is now...
