Can central lock of a car be easily broken? - 13-03-2005, 12:23 PM

A weird thing happened with me last night. Someone broke into my car equiped with autocop cenrtal lock and stole a stereo. Well it is ordinary stuff. But the weird part is that the central lock is still intact. I heard that it is easy to make the central lock dysfunctional by fusing two wires, and then steal the accessories. But here when i returned to my car, my car was open, stereo gone and central lock still working fine.

How is it possible? Kya choron ne sach main itne tarraki kar le hai. Central lock was considered very safe way to protect your car i guess?????

I'd once figured out a way in which it would (theoritically) be possible to do what has been done to your car. My car is also equipped with Autocop so I am talking from experience.

See all the doors, the bonnet and the boot (or dickey) of the car have those tiny little switches, which are depressed when the doors (or the bonnet or boot) are closed. When the doors open, the switch comes up, and the alarm sounds (the same mechanism is behind the automatic lighting up of the cabin light of the car when you open the door).

So anyways, here's what you do. You somehow manage to disengage the lock of the bonnet. Now, while opening the bonnet, you put a knife, or some other such similar thing, underneath the bonnet to keep the switch depressed while lifting up the bonnet (I got this idea from Entrapment!!). Now, that the bonnet is up, you just disconnect one of the battery wires, so as to render the security system useless. Now, do as you please with the car. While leaving, follow the exact same procedure (though I wonder why anyone would!!).

I doubt this is what happened with you.....but then......

PS: Which car do you own? If it's a Maruti 800, or even a pre-2000 zen or esteem, opening the door latches is not a very big deal...

I'll tell you something, don't ever trust autocop (or any other security system) to be fool proof. Do check all doors and windows manually every time you lock the car from the remote. Probably, one of your car's doors was inadvertently left unlocked, and the alarm didn't go off (for some reason). I know I'm stating the obvious....but then, can't help it, can we. Can just be more careful in the future. I feel about your loss though, I myself have been victim of such mishaps a couple of times in the past......
