Opportunities do not wait for strategies and strategists

I AM NOT an entrepreneur by choice. In 1966, at the age of 21, I was practically overnight thrust into the role of the CEO of a company about $4 million in sales then, and not in the best of shape. I was trying to take charge of a role for which I had no training, no experience, no preparation and no demonstrated strength. We used to make vegetable oil. The journey from there on over the last four decades has not been easy. I learnt more from difficulties and failures than from successes.

I want to build a coaching institute...need capital investor - 10-10-2009, 01:12 PM

Hi to everyone,

I'm so glad I pounced upon this thread. I'd like to share my dream.

I'm 24 from Kolkata. I'm mad about opening my own coaching institute/finishing school. I've chalked out every detail and idea about my would-be startup...from its name to the ads to the logo...I have full faith in my ideas. And I know people WILL come....if you give anything of quality to them...which TRULY benefits them for life.

I've seen that most spoken English institutes promise more than they deliver. And most students (which include some of my Bengali friends) coming out of such institutes find that they are still NOT able to express themselves fluently or elegantly. They fumble for the right words and eventually end up translating their native language (Bengali) word for word into English, which makes for poor English sentences. And nor are they adequately trained on accent, or on how to express everyday ideas/situations.

But on the good side, most people tend to make the same kind of mistakes. How often have you found people saying such things?

"Myself Prodipto working in..." ("I'm Prodipto working in...")
"I'm saying you na!" ("I'm telling you...")
"No person came to office.." ("No one came to office..")
"I only told you about it" ("I was the one who told you about it")
"Write on backside of paper" ("Write at the back of the paper")
"Fill up the form!" ("Fill in the form" or simply "Fill the form")
"Why you are always scolding me?" ("Why are you always scolding me?")
"Apply the buttons of your shirt!" ("Do up your shirt")

I'm on the verge of completing a comprehensive reading/audio/motivational material that I've developed to help such people. I've given a lot of stress to accent reduction, everyday English & self-esteem. I've developed the material after a lot of studying and researching....meticulously examining the kinds of errors which Indians make while speaking English.

I've immense faith in myself and my desire to help and serve people. I do not want a SINGLE girl or guy to come out of my school feeling dissatisfied or looted, which sadly is the case with most money-minting spoken English schools. They just give you cursory BPO knowledge with a dash of accent and tons of grammar rules and then thrust you into some stupid BPO.

Although my program would also benefit BPO-wannabes, it is going to equip them for LIFE.

I also have this dream to start a new magazine targeted to the health of senior citizens. It is old people who are usually most conscious of health but there are sadly no magazines which would appeal to them. What you'd simply find are health magazines with incredible models on the covers and full of sex tips....probably the last thing an elderly guy would be interested in! I really feel this is a niche waiting to be filled. I've always been interested in medicine from my childhood (touchwood!) so I already have an entire repository of the most interesting articles ready!

The only thing I do not have is: CAPITAL. And I seriously feel that you do not need an MBA to be an entrepreneur. You just need the passion. And the drive. And yes, the money.

If theres any rich guy/girl around here, plz help me! SERIOUSLY!!!

Hi puys...

Would like to share my dream...
But before that i would like to give a brief intro about muself.
I am Arun Chaturvedi from Gorakhpur. I have completed my B.Tech in Mech. Engg. in 2009 itself and currently am working in Mumbai.
I want to open a chain of schools. I belong to a city where there is an acute shortage of good quality schools. I have sufficient land at a prominent place to start my first school.
Currently I am doing research on various innovative methods to enhance quality education. I have also analysed where our education system lacks.
I feel that the initial years are v. crucial in a child's upbringing and school plays a v.important role.

I am a bit worried about the initial finances. I have the land which is 1 of the prerequisites. But if I start till primary in the beginning (may be till 3rd or 5th ) i will still have to have a hefty sum. I have talked to some of my friends and they were of the opinion that no VC would provide money for a school.

May be you guys can chip in with your views. Any view however remotely related , would be welcomed because i feel many a times brilliant ideas are generated from not so good ideas.

Cheers..

Hi,

As you have been rightly informed, the chances of a VC providing you money are truly scarce. Any venture needs the right people, right ideas and the right resources to pull it off. While you might have the land, that is not really a very unique characteristic for anyone to invest in your venture. For there will be people out there with land & the expertise as well.

I also doubt a bank would just fund it, because nothing in what you have written talks about the people behind the venture and their capabilities and past achievements.

You may want to think this through, work on assembling the right set of people and then see the plan evolve from there.

Re: I want to build a coaching institute...need capital investor - 31-10-2009, 04:14 PM

Thanks bro for initialising the discussion...
Ya i did not elabortae the entire plan.
i have a team of 3 people.
1 of them is teaching in one of the best schools of the city for the past ten years. He wants to get out of this and do some management stuffs. So I am counting him as the principal. The other guy works as an LIC agent. He has good contacts, he is v.good at negotiating and coming out with practical solutions. ya i agree that having a land is not a unique characteristic, but land is something v.important for schools. And so the problem regarding that is solved.
Also i have heard from some people that schols rarely fail. Because the market for school is always be there.
Finance is something which i am concerned about.
canbody roughly guess the amount which will be required for opening a school till 5th.

and please guys chip in with your views regarding what better facilities can be provided to the students. I have certain plans to improve the quality of education which i ll start discussing once people start responding.

waiting for responses...

Why don't you enter our college competition @ Bplan and submit your plan.

You have got chance to win both prize money as well as your case is presented to VC who are willing to invest up to 5 billion Rupees.

Check this out - ZEAL 09 @ NMIMS
