Going by above post, what do I see here ... too many startups focusing on a single sector .. that's technology ...

I understand, starting a internet base venture is one of the easiest & low cost way to start off ... but there's one point that we are missing here is internet business has very low entry barrier ... almost any1 can start it & this unnecessary increases competition and reduces profit for every1 ...

this is what Raamdeo Agrawal, Director & Co-founder, Motilal Oswal Financial Services has to say -

Entry barrier should be preferably intellectual in character
The entry barrier should be more ‘intellectual’ in character rather than ‘physical’. This is because while it is next to impossible to compete with a strong brand (an intellectual barrier), competitive advantage associated with a piece of land (a physical barrier) disappears when a competitor acquires one as well.

Strong brands such as ‘Thums-Up’, ‘Parle-G’, etc. have enabled their companies to retain the top spot. However, at times, there could be exceptions. For instance, the entry barrier associated with TISCO would be its large base of iron ore and coal, which allows it to lower its raw material cost drastically vis-à-vis its competitors for long time to come.

Entry barrier should be long-lasting

An entry barrier should not only be strong, but also long lasting. Such companies will keep making money because their entry barriers keep working for them. For instance, Britannia may not be the best managed company but its strong brand continuously earns money for it.

Buy into such companies at the earliest

As an investor, buy into such businesses ahead of the crowd. If an entry barrier has been established very recently, it may not yet be exploited by the business. Accordingly, the market would not have valued it in the company’s share price.

For instance, when Financial Technologies (promoters of MCX) got its commodity exchange license and launched it, the popular opinion held was that it would be unable to execute the business well. But, today, it has emerged as a premier commodity exchange. Investing in such companies before the market sees their potential delivers best appreciation.

what entry barrier these startup have? a brand name maybe? a name that is familiar? but it is enuf?

I remember back in 2001, ET reported Sabhir Bhatia has actually made a mistake for selling Hotmail for $400mn in 1998 bcoz now Hotmail is worth at least$10bn ...

Thats' increase of 25 times in just 3 years, Going by this, today Hotmail must be worth more than $100bn ...is it the case today? Today is has many competitor such (google, rediff & indiatimes) which din't exist at that time?

So what does it indicate, having a strong brand name is not enuf in internet world, brands are more valuable in FMCG

IMO, over next decade 90% of internet startup will vanish go bankrupt ... unless they create smting tat's not easy to duplicate or copy ...

Its true abut Hotmail... But today if we see no one even goes on hotmail. Even i never login into my hotmail account. I think the major factor was positioning and marketing which Microsoft lagged even after acquiring the brand...

Infact who knows he might do the same thing if he acquires yahoo...

actually smwhere in 2003-04 MS decided to shift focus back to MSN & make MSN as one stop portal .. so they started giving MSN email id too ... this was in direct competition to hotmail which then become part of MSN portal & thus got sidelined ... now it have MS live service for competition as well

but there are still large users of hotmail ... in developed countries mainly ... new users seems to opt from gmail

Both you and Allwin are right, but in a different context. You cannot trust the absoluteness of the data on Alexa, but it is definitely spot on about comparative stuff... when it says that site A has more traffic than site B .
