Replying to a year-old post but this makes sense, no matter which way you see it. As an entrepreneur, the most valuable thing for you is time and it would not be a wise idea to spend 2 years in an MBA, the value addition of which towards your ultimate goal of starting is business is marginal at best.

Lots of introspection ahead for me in coming month or so..

cheers

as we look back and survey the terrain to determine where we've been and where we are in relationship to where we're going, we clearly see that we could not have gotten where we are without coming the way we came.....

ok now i am faced with a problem and i need help from you guyz.

i am in 3rd yr final semester of ICT engineering in ahmedabad. I have a business idea and after discussing it with some big-guyz in industry i am sure this idea kinda works. But almost every guy i spoke to told me "your team is more important than the idea . when u go to a VC they ask you "explain us why u are the best team that can excute this idea". They advised me to spend considerable amount of time and energy in building a formidable team". I dunno much about team building. i am a technical guy with good expertise in internet technologies (yaa including SOAP ,Mashups etc).

My idea is a web-based service which falls under the much vaunted "Web 2.0" category. i want to do my B-Tech project in an incubator which helps me in kick-starting my own venture. That means i exactly have 6 months before i try and form a good team. This is where i stumble. It will be greatful if you guyz can educate me on how to form a good team.

For them the concepts got clearer through interactions with peers, faculty and the predecessors than reading books by any "Mgmt Gurus".
Hey sakz / all,
I haven't really gone through all further posts to know the replies to this , but my thoughts very much align with those of Sakz, beyond interaction with peers, i think it is also about the networking advantage you get in an MBA.
Any one looking at his own venture, would sooner or later require some help in growing/ winning contracts, and that is somehting their ex- batch mates can help them out with...

what say.. ???

Hey Deepu,
Don't understand what your work really is all about.. but shall contribute my mite. There is an incubation centre at IIT B and IISC, that i know of. also you should try and contact some professor at http://www.ediindia.org/default.asp .. this link is one of the first pieces of information in this thread. Also if you think of making your team, mebbe you should first think of what other capabilities you need to get your organization afloat. and as my friend says,
"You can never fight a war till you enter the Battlefield"

Re: some Entrepreneurship tips - 24-03-2006, 12:37 AM

Back to an old thread

Looking at the last few posts... and my personal experience in a successful startup in a nice place I must add a few things...

Its always team team team... Though one super leader is a necessity...
The idea is almost irrelevant... Because frankly most ideas... anyone can come up with... Though some ideas are clearly outstanding... But otherwise its a team that gels together and fits together that works... Now team is important because down the line there will be disagreements and a state of hopelessness even... you better have a team that has the guts to stick thro all this... So while making a team think of the long term whether all of you will stick together in thick and thin. Other than that the abilities of the team members should be complementary. Not all need to be super brains but there need to be a few but importantly all should enjoy working together

Other than that its the scale of your idea and vision that matter... Some people dream of a 0$ company.. a good little wine shop which will make them more than the IIM avg salary every year... Others have 0 billion dollar $ dreams... All have to start at zero

Personally think the MBA is absolutely not needed... but has its advantages in access to smart people and infrastructure and also importantly a brand name MBA will mean in the worst case scenario of your startup tanking getting a job again will be easier

K

PS: Seriously interested folks on this thread can pm me
