hi there,
its definitely thrilling to know that Keralam is gonna get an IIT.
but the strongest candidate is obviously NIT, Calicut. they've been maintaining very high standards in technical education (...in the conventional branches of engg. in ship technology and the likes CUSAT is the pioneer and the leader.)
there was a proposal to raise the status of CET, Thiruvananthapuram. check this old report. . still another proposal was to shift the NIT campus to Tvm and to set up an IIT. its only recently the Keralam public came to know abt the chances of CUSAT to b the IIT.
CUSAT does 've the infrastructure and the industrial exposure. also, they 've various related courses already running (like MBA). but once given the IIT status, they shd detach the courses like 'linguistics' frm the uni. some other colleges r also affiliated to CUSAT and those engg colleges r to b detached and to b affiliated to the new technical uni formed.
and abt ur dream to pass out frm an IIT .......... is it possible ... u'll pass out frm CUSAT itself ... i think, that's what happened in case of NIT aka REC, Calicut. (nikhil, MrAnderson and frens, do u ppl hold an NIT certificate or a University of Calicut certificate ??) unless it'll b so unjust especially to the IIT junta. u've survived a relatively low competition and pressure, and still u r passing out frm an IIT ..... naa. i accept ur calibre, potential and efforts (Anchorage roxxxxxxx ). but compared to the real IIT students, ur burden is much less, i can tell u that. atleast think of the entrance exams u'd. (i myself 'd a rank in CUSAT entrance to get ece. had joined there i wld've got the fee concessions for the top 3 entrants !! and the IIT-JEE ...... where was I ?? *running for a telescope* its that faaaar!!)
as a proud Keraleeyan, i'm thankful to all the ppl who worked to bring the IIT to Keralam, and in doing so, whether u get IIT status or not, u've definitely raised the status of the insti. kudo's for that ...
but abt ur dreams to b an IIT'ian ........... i've doubts ... tho sorry to say that ...
Rick.

hi rick, thanks for ur insightful comment !! think i got little carried away in the
excitement
but i think u did'nt go thru the link i posted properly.......as it clearly states that
cusat is to b upgraded to the IIT status and not nit,cal or cet,tvm ! neways just wait
4 the union budget on mon to c which way does the decision goes ...
well i agree there r certain difficulties to b sorted out (as u have already pointed)
before it converts into IIT but i firmly believe that cusat will b successfull in
overcoming all its difficulties in its road to glory
and as far my IITian comment was concerned i waz jus kiddin dude .
i kno the standard of exam which i got thru b4 joining cusat and the
and the type of work pressure on me here as compared to iit's .....
it wud be grossly unfair to them if i get the IIT degree as i m nowhere
compared to those real studs!!!!! ....
but my dear frnd that sense of pride will always b there whenever i'll state the name of my alma mater, whatever the degree may be
p.s:- neways thx 4 waking me up 4m my false dreams and bringing me back to reality
cheers !!!

was that a sarcastic reply...... or ........
whatever, its awrit, i take it in the positive sense.
and abt the news paper clipping u've posted, i went thru it and found the data u've mentioned. but in the recent past (within a three days period) there was an article in Malayala Manorama regarding this. (i searched their site to post it if its available in the .net version, but cldn't find it. pls try the print version) there, they still kept the picture vague. as its the leading daily in the state, they'ld 've spedified it if they 'd the clear pic. so that simply means, the decision is still pending.
CUSAT is undoubtedly one of the finest places to b in for sure, and u can really b proud of it. no doubt abt it. i'm somebody who keeps track of the events in the state, and i can tell u that CUSAT has never been on the centre stage in the IIT dreams of the state (atleast in the public view. u gys were sweating blood, i understand)
NIT does deserve a recognition, but its always advantageous for the state to 've two of the best premium tech insti's here. so, if any insti other than NIT is raised as IIT, then its definitely something gud for the state. i dont mind if its CET, CUSAT or a completely new IIT.
lets hope that, Keralam 'll get an IIT,
Rick.

U guys r joking,right!
don't tell me u r serious as I know that there are atleast 5 engg. institutes in kerala itself which are better than CUSAT.
i did my engg, in kerala in the days when REC was still REC and not NIT so i might not be the best guy to comment on the present standard of the colleges but as far as i know ,nobody used to go to CUSAT if they could bag even Civil engg. at CET,TKM,GEC...i dont believe it has improved too much in 4 yrs.
I did my schooling outside kerala and came down there for my engg. only. I must admit that I had not heard of cusat before coming to kerala and i am sure none of my friends in school had.I came to know abt cusat frm the guys who used to tell me how they had 7th rank in CUSAT entrance and had 1528th rank in the kerala entrance and still didnt go to cusat. The only other insti raised to IIT level till now was Roorkee which I am sure all of us had been hearing being mentioned in the same breath as an IIT.Also BHU,Osmania,ISM,etc..everybody knows abt them.Do u seriously think CUSAT matches up to these institutes yet.CUSAT is not even the best university in Kerala.
I wud think that if they are planning an IIT in kerala,it should be NIT,Cal.
CET can then be turned into an NIT.
But,CUSAT??seriously guys,gimme a break!!
P.S:Try asking a non keralite on this forum if he/she had heard of CUSAT and i'll take back my words. As for the report,i guess its the handiwork of some overenthusiastic mallu reporter.

hey, its not that bad, awrit !! -
28-02-2005, 07:35 PM
hi spatcho,
the thread initiator himself is a non-Keralite, so CUSAT has 'some reputation' outside Kerala too (assumed: he's not born and brot up in Kerala !!). even he doesn't vouch for it, with all conviction i can tell u that Marine related courses in CUSAT is definitely gud, and the rest of the courses - now they r having decent repute for sure. that's, if somebody gets civil in TKM, and ECE in CUSAT, make no mistake he/she 'll join CUSAT (coz, i've an eg in my frend who did exactly the same!!).
i do understand what u've described. i myself had a very gud rank in CUSAT entrance where as my Kerala entrance rank was not that gud. i'ld 've easily admitted to ece with fee concession (coz, somebody behind me in cusat rank was the rank #3 in the class of ece (199 at the time of admission). still, i dint go for CUSAT, instead opted mech in GEC. during those times CUSAT wasn't really established (as u said, many dint even know abt it). but now, after the emergence of a lotsa engg colleges, (percentilewise score of ) CUSAT has shot up. for ece and cse cusat is considered gud compared to many other options. still its NOT the perfect destination, but the scenario has changed, that too, drastically.
and abt the CUSAT report, that's not perfectly "the handiwork of some overenthusiastic mallu reporter", there's something in it. in todays Malayala Manorama, there's a report and quote frm the CM Mr. Oommen Chandy in that aspect. that's CUSAT is in the race for sure. he was attending a cusat programme.
and when u raise the status, its not assumed that everything 'll continue as it is now and it 'll simply b called an IIT. instead, there'll b a lotta changes and stipulations. atleast 'Guest Lecturers' 'll b less in number !! i aint sure abt the detailed formalities, but i'm sure that what all gonna change is not just 'the Name'.
lets think abt IIM K, what was there when it started - virtually NOTHING !! but now, where does it stand ?
costs can drastically b reduced if they can utilize some existing infra. cusat is having relatively modern infra, and they've lotsa space left free. that cld b one of the reason for cosidering cusat.
also, NIT, CET and GEC r the colleges in Govt sector. rest r pvt. so, they cannot b considered technically. and in case of GEC, no space or whatsoever left for expansions. somewhat similar is the case of CET. NIT has some space left, thank God.
so, if they r gonna simply call an insti 'IIT' frm a dawn, it cannot b CUSAT, NITK is a better choice. but, if they wanna set-up something - yes, consider it.
regds,
Rick.

and its not that being a cusat student i m vouching 4 it ...... i was just going by the newspaper report, thats it ...............moreover being a non-keralite i m not too much aware bout the ground realities of other coll here but acc 2 sm of my mallu frnds, cusat is definitely one among the bests......partricularly in the last few yrs it has improved drastically......so much so that at present there r lotsa students frm north stdying here...and if i say north i mean it,i.e guys 4m delhi,dehradun,guj,raj........4get bout bihar n jharkhand(these gyus r ubiquitous )......and u all wud'nt bliv it,there r 2 students in my batch who even left IIT to join cusat !!!!!!! ....so its not a completely unknown entity ..
moreover i got to kno that, cusat was the front runner due to its excellent reputation in post grad studies,i.e reasearch and other facilities and nt b'coz of its engg pgm......time and again its been recieving huge grants in photonics(1 of the best in world !),rubber tech, instrumentaion, phy, chem dept etc...i dunno what the reality is but hopefully rick can throw more light on it ...but as far as PG(post grad not pagalguy yaar !!!!! ) is considered cusat is definitely the best .........but neways the changes r always welcome(esp. guest lecturers !) and they r definitely gonna change the build up b4 granting it the IIT status
cheers !!!
vishu.
p.s:- wud luv more comments on it,particularly 4m the malayalis........we northies can at most b superficial in our analysis but u can give us real insight !

hehe....I donno how many of ya folks are actually aware of this....But for more than two years, almost every minister worth his salt in AP has been crying hoarse about how they have managed to get an IIT sanctioned at a small temple town (rather, village) near hyderabad......How a popular coaching academy person has launched a veritable "crusade" for the establishment of the IIT !!! Indeed, has been very funny watching all these.....
Was just thinking....is opening more IITs or "converting" existing institutes into IITs gonna be of any help......In specific context to the AP scene.....there are LOADS of pvt engineering colleges with next to pathetic infrastructure, both physical and intellectual !!! Mebbe time for the Govt to realize their misplaced priorities !!
Cheers
ps: no offence intended, but yea, never heard of cusat
