Rinku,
CUSAT is a university, not a college and I suppose it is one of the best in India. I remember reading "it being the fourth best university in India" as per the then UGC rankings. (Not sure, though in the top 5. So dont lynch me)
BTW, what should one call the LL.B grad from CUSAT? BTech (Law) ??

I was in the first batch of NIT calicut.i.e.2003.Yes my seniors(Mr Anderson yeah) got a degree from calicut university but we got a a NIT degree.
So as on paper, they are RECians, but still a part of their alma mater.
Thats great news that CUSAT is being considered to become an IIT,but i truly believe that NIT calicut is a long way ahead, just not in terms of infrastructure and faculty but also because of the students which come from all over the country.
But one sad thing i saw in last year;s CAT application brochure. In the list of colleges ,they had not included NIT calicut,so we had to fill as "others".And this "others " must have mattered when IIMs shortlist applicants for GD/PIs.
That feels like a stab in the back because we gave IIMK refuge in our campus for so many years!!

Indian Institute of Socialism -
03-05-2005, 11:24 PM
Firstly IITs have already lost their sting... Now u add the crappy student base of CUSAT and other mediocre univs, the IITs will be dulled beyond recogntion. Luckily I think its time to rub the shine of the IITs even more... It being a separate point.
I dont see 25 American institutes of technology, 15 German institutes of technology, 10 Israeli institute of technology anywhere else in the world.
And these guys are doing pretty good as far as I know and have actually experienced.
The "Indian Institute of " is a syndrome well developed by the socialistic suc**rs of the dark ages. Instead of thinking we need 15 top colleges for engineering, We are programmed to think that we need 15 IITs. We think its the name IIT or even IIM that works. Infact the name creates a needless disruption in the way things should work.
So a upstart ISB privately developed can do anything but its greatest battle is against that socialistically created indian govt brand name "Indian Institute Of".
Maybe someone who wants to create a Stanford in India will think hey whatever I do I might be just 16th ranked then what the f*** I will go to Sri Lanka instead.
Infact they should de"Indian Institute of"ise every single university that has that stupid name.

Agree that IITs are losing their sting. 'The Indian Institute of' tag may lose some of its sheen in the years to come. At the same time, its important to have this Indian Institute of tag, as already a brand name has been created, which is well respected worldwide and we can leverage certain gains out of it.
Swaminathan Ankleshwaria Aiyar had once said that let a 1000 IITs mushroom. I wouldnt want this to happen. Because, clearly there is a difference in the intellectual capability of say: the AIR 1-100 and the rest 101-2000 odd.. And if so many colleges get IIT status, the student quality that so very symbolises IITs will degrade. So, what we indeed need to do is that get not 1000 IITs but colleges of comparable infrastructure. And the RECs, actually were meant to be just that. With the grant, let these new colleges set their curriculum like the IITs. Get some help from their profs in course designing, hire profs. who are PHDs and improve accountability.
And another thing, we need to change our mindset that only the colleges with the "Indian Institute of" tag can be world class. Obviously, these colleges do have the best infrastructure, so there can be no complaints in that aspect as to 'why' peeps go there.
Right now its sort of a circular pattern. People realise that IITs are the best, therfore best students go there and in turn IITs reclaim their numero uno position.

hve to wait -

i think it will take years and thousand of crore of rupees to give iit status to some other university ,ministry of hrd has nothing to du with iit status ,it is ministry of finance which has to play major role ,even in earlier report it has been said
that level of these recommended universities is far below than iit's and specially 5 old iit's ,i dun think there is anything wrong having 10 iit's but compromise on quality should not be there ,
since in the other countries 2 lakh students dun write jee and pressure is inhuman,as far as these benchmarks are considered they are useless ,one should take a deeper dip into comparing of levels ,iit roorkee was exception ,it had already developed itself to become an iit .
as far as quality of iit's is conidered ,it has increased a lot as govt is putting hundreds of crores on new infrastructure and development and recognition of iit's has increased worlwide with ,more iitians passing out .

Really...?? The links below suggest the contrary.

There is a growing interest in other countries who want IITs to either set shop on their land or help them set up institutes similar to the IITs.

IIT Status -
11-05-2005, 02:46 PM
Please go through the following article on Hindustan Times. Should clear a few things up.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/1...1,00080001.htm
Sorry buddy, but there seems to be no plan to give IIT status to CUSAT or any other university - atleast in the near future.
