A trader bought one type of coffee powder at Rs.32 a kilo and mixed some of it with a better quality of coffee powder bought at Rs.40 a kilo,
and he sold the blend at Rs.43 a kilo.had a profit of 25% on the cost.
how many kilos of each kind must he use to make a blend of a hundred kilos weight?

guys plz do help out..

first use the search function before starting a new thread.u can post all doubts regarding quant doubts here:

http://www.pagalguy.com/cat/viewtopic.php?t=772

coming to ur problem, since the selling price is 43 and the profit percentage is 25%,the cost price is Rs.34.40

now using the alligations rule we get the ratio of the Rs.32 powder and the Rs.40 powder is 7:3.

(the alligations rule as u must be knowing states that if two substance of cost P1 and P2 are mixed and sold at P then they are mixed in the ratio
[(P2-P)/(P-P1)].)

so to get 100 kg of mixture we need 70 kg of the Rs.32 variety and 30 kg of Rs.40 variety.

bye...

I have got this through hit n trial method

now here it says the selling price of 1 kg is Rs 43, through this selling price one makes profit of 25% on cost

we got two categories
Ist Rs 32
IInd Rs 40

We have to come up with a blend in which our selling is making a profit of 25% over our CP.

So CP = Rs 34.4

so we have to use the quantities in which we can make our could at
Rs 34.4

So we should consider 750 g of Rs 32 category = Rs 24
260 g of Rs 40 caategory =Rs 10.4

So we make Rs 34.4 our CP

In 100g we wold need 26kgs of Rs 40 category
75 kgs of Rs 32 category

I m really bad at these questions.... plz respond if it is right or wrong

using 26 kg of Rs.40 category and 75 kg of the Rs.32 category wud give us the total cost price as Rs.3440 but then the total quantity wud become 101 kg and not 100 kg.
other than this there is nothing really wrong.but yes the solving it wud be time consuming as one wont always come up with an answer in the first try itself.

bye..

hey pendyal
need a little bit more explanation
how did u got 7:3
as u said [(P2-P)/(P-P1)] =[(40-43)/(43-32)] = -3/11
can u plz explain the allegation rule a bit more
thanx

sorry, made a mistake. Pis not the orice at which the mixture is sold,it is the cost price of the mixture.
so in the formula [(P2-P)/(P-P1)] : P2=40,P1=32,P=34.4
so we get the ratio of the cheaper substance to that of the costlier substance as (40-34.4)34.4-32) i.e. 5.6:2.4 or 7:3 in other words.

the formula is a standard formula to be used when we are given the cost prices of the components and the cost price of the mixture and asked to find the ratio in which they are mixed.

bye..

Or if you are unfamiliar/uncomfortable with alligations rule (like me), then equations are always the best and least timeconsuming ways to solve a problem.

a= no. of kilos of 32/Kg coffee powder

32a+40(100-a)=34.40 X 100
=>a=70
hence the result
