God, I think this is one of the HOPELESS discussions!!
I am surprised to see that sucha strong community like 'Toast Masters' doesnt have any spokesman to even talk about what the club is all about & how it will help junta in the long run!! I mean, if U belong to some community, wouldn't u go out of ur way to actually talk about what it is all about & how u would love to see it grow!! I am sure Arthi started this discussion with a very noble intention of spreading the awareness & I hate see absolutely bland posts reg the same!!
What happnd Junta?? Will this be the similar way you will respond if ever a time comes in regards to PG community!!

Hi,
Ok let me give u details how to join a Toast Masters Club and what they do:
1. Find out clubs in your city and visit as a guest for a few sessions to get a feel of the crowd that comes there. I am from Bangalore and a few good ones are:
a. Bangalore Toastmasters (They meet every Friday 6.30-8.30pm at Hotel capitol)
b. Sunshine Toastamsters (6.30-8.30pm every Thursday, Alliance Franchaise)
c. LA 1924 (6.30-8.30, Hotel gateway...not aware of the day)
d. Infosys, Talisma, Mecon etc have their own TM clubs.
2. Each club has it's own fee structure. Althought the basic is the same (1500 odd for 6 months and a joining fee of 800..not sure on teh current figures) they might add misc expenses depending on teh place the meeting is held to cover the costs. LA 1924 is the costliest in Blore while Infy, Talisma etc are the cheapest sicne they don't have to pay for the place.
3. Each TM meet generally has 3 sessions.
a. A prepared speech session - Every TM has to give a set of speeches that are based on a certain skil (say voice modulation, gestures, conviction etc). He/she has to book his/her slot in advance and prepare the speech accordingly often mentored by ppl who have already given tht speech. the speech is generally in the range of 5-7 mins although the higher modules are 10-12 mins each. the speech is also evaluated by another fellow TM who has again already give tht speech. any topic can be chosen as long as it does justice to the skill in question and is not on politics/religion/controversial topics.
b. a table topic session (extempore) - one person (again volunteers in advance) prepares extempore topics ad throws them to the members and each of the mebers have to anwer/speak ont eh topic accordingly in about 2/3 mins
c. feedback session - all feedbacks on the speeches made tht day is given now by the respective evaluators. also the speakers recv feedback by the other members written in slips. the mebers also vote for the best speaker of the day, best evaluator and the best table topic speaker by ballot.
4. the show is entirely handled by a person (host who again volunteers before hand) who is called the toastmaster of the day.
5. generally a CTM (Competent TM) is sufficient for most ppl (it has 10 speeches of diff skill levels and generally takes 1.5-2.5 yrs to complete..depending on ur skill as a orator and ur speed) but some ppl go on to do ATM(advanced TM) and then DTM (distinguished TM). On, record there are only 3 DTMs in India.
5. Regarding TM clubs in Chennai, i don't have much idea....but i know Delhi, Mumbai and Blore have TM clubs (with Blore leading majorly)
Hope this helps you,

Oh btw one more thing, a TM certification can do u a lot good:
1. Amazing firepower when it comes to GDs and Interviews.
2. Ppl esp. during interviews ask you about it. i was asked in my SPJIMR, IIT interviews. Tht i didn't make it was another reason.
3. Has a good value in USA and UAE.

umm...arthi, not sure if u can start a club by yourselves...u need permission from Toastmasters international, get affiliated to them (it is akin to starting a school) and there are a lot of legalities to be done with including money. You can go ahead and make a club on similar lines without calling it Toastmasters. | | | | | | | |
