I thought to start this thread this morning but this(my pc) virus affected soul resisted all my eager efforts. So the game of politics is back with more colour, stink, pleads, apologies and promises by pseud politicos -their mastery is of such a degree that it almost goes unnoticed to un-trained eyes. What we need is a high resolution 1024 frames per-second camera to detect, again, obviously it goes unnoticed to untrained eyes.

What I thought of was that we post about..
  • Political issues that concern us - it may be different for different people.
  • Your views about elections/electorate/election process at large. And if these need a change.
  • Your views on the issues that are projected by political parties. (Ex: your take on BJP's Ram Mandir proposal)
  • What issued do you want politicians to address.
  • Any trivial stuff that you would like to share .. like Behenji's perpetual Pink attire and Jayalalita's green saree.
  • Ideal Prime Ministerial candidate.
  • Which Front do you believe in? (UPA/NDA/3rd front)
  • will appreciate if someone can add few more..
We can have a "Todays Question" kind of thing. I'm willing to contribute.

@ no.1_bakar: can you add a poll reg. Prime Minister. Will pm u list.

A great truth is a truth whose opposite is also a great truth.

Hey kewl thread and a good initiative !!!
Just got my voter id today . So will be exercising my franchise for the first time . But I have a doubt in my mind . Should I vote for the party or for the person .

For eg I want Party X to come into power but I feel that ABC of party Y has done good work and needs to be elected . Then what should I do in such case ???

And also pour in your thoughts regarding your constituencies and which candidate and party deserves to win .

Re: Elections in INdia 2009 (DemoCrazy) - 24-03-2009, 11:31 AM

Since the thread iS about democracy, i will like to share my views abt our father of nation MAHATMA GANDHI n his ideas on same.

Just like being simple in his individual life, Mahatma Gandhi was equally simple in his work and ideas. His personality was neither of the kind of perpendicular nor was it angled. His appeal to the people was always direct. That is why Gandhi considered the system based on non-violence supreme and essential .According to him, that system can only be the real and pure democracy as Ramarajya.
Gandhi has also said, “Democracy must be in essence…meaning the art and science of mobilizing the entire physical, economic and spiritual resources of all the various sections of people in the service of common good of all.”

Nice thread mate.
I'll really talk more on this issue, but before that, just wanted to ask how many people know about Form 17c. I infact wanted to know more on this.
I'll write what i have heard from my friends.
Its a form which you can demand in polling booth, just to write a complaint that u came here to vote but since you are not aware of so and so MP or particular candidate you do not want to waste your vote.
You can demand explaination from that candidate.
It happens when candidates take up new constituencies, therby people also dnt recogniz his/her work and they just vote on parties name.
Anyone having more info on this ..please share with all of us..

@no.1bakar.. Whats your name. And what kind of poll is this. does it reveal the identity of voters, or hides that. I think less people will vote if it reveals.. Kindly mention that too..
rest is all fine.. Its a nice thread , expecting more to come in..

Regards,
Abhinav

My two cents: Vote for the party. If you feel party X should come to power, vote for party X.

IMHO, in a national election, who forms a govt is more important than local, constituency-based issues. In state assembly elections and in local elections, it makes sense to vote for the candidate.

So taking your example, unless party X puts up an exceedingly bad candidate(say with criminal background, corrupt, does nothing for constituency at all) and party Y's candidate is exceedingly better, I would vote for party X.

So, PG has a place for this as well.

Like every time elections are hitting a new low. What with the Change India/Lead India initiatives by the media houses to stop criminals from entering politics.(Recently Pappu Yadav was invited for a 'Debate' on NDTV... can't get better/worse than this).

And as long as we don't vote/take charge, we don't have the right to blame others who occupy a position by virtue of their popularity(can be muscle power also.. depends).

Politics instead of being defined by Policies is defined by the Percentage of reservation you can offer to this sect or to that caste. To the point that even corporates were under the radar of reservation-based vote-bank politics.

We have a prime minister who is governed by a madamjee from Ferrari-land and until very recently had a home minister who needed nothing apart from this madamjee's 'blessings' to carry on.

We also have a telecom minister who caused a loss of 60K crores to the ex-chequer and who in a span of 1 year has floated a company with a turnover of 755 Crores.

We have a home ministry which time and again collects evidence for serial bomb blasts that occur at various cities and point towards a 'friend' country, and that asks our 'big daddy-cum-uncle' to act. Hoping against hope that 'Change-Man' will come to get us out of deep shit.

We have lots and lots of self-styled, convent-educated, 'secular' activists that form the opinion of our 'educated middle class'.

We also have a media which instead of highlighting the policy issues is concentrating on the making/breaking of alliances 24*7.

Like the Americans, I too feel I should vote for a change and so I will.
I hope 5 years hence I wouldn't be ranting like this on a public forum?

Re: Elections in INdia 2009 (DemoCrazy) - 24-03-2009, 07:21 PM

some gyaan:
india is a democracy, wid one of its main features being holding free and fair elections.at the national level we have the rajya sabha and the lok sabha.at the state level also we can have two houses-legislative council and legislative assembly(bicameral legislature eg-UP) or one house-legislative assembly wich is like the lok sabha(unicameral legislature eg-west bengal, orissa).the two houses are also called vidhan sabha and vidhan parishad.the state elections are similar to the national one.
The members of the Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly, rather than by the citizens at large. Rajya Sabha members are elected by each state Vidhan Sabha using the single transferable vote system. At present there are 233 members of the Rajya Sabha elected by the Vidhan Sabhas, and there are also twelve members nominated by the President as representatives of literature, science, art and social services. Rajya Sabha members can serve for six years, and elections are staggered, with one third of the assembly being elected every 2 years.
the lok sabha(LS) on the other hand is wat we vote for.the entire country is divided into constituencies who send one seat/member to the LS.the constitution limits the size of LS to 550(xtra 2 can be from anglo indian community).at present there are 543 members in the LS.
more later on,jst one more piece of info-we have 7 national level parties and around 40-45 or more state level parties.HOW IS SOMEONE SUPPOSED TO DECIDE?WHY CANT WE HAVE JUST 2-3 PARTIES?

Re: Elections in INdia 2009 (DemoCrazy) - 24-03-2009, 08:33 PM

hi all.
it is nice to see that far more ppl are aware of their right (in fact it should be a duty) to vote this time around. a lot more ppl are vying for "change" ,after the famous US presidential elections. but the problem in india is that we don't have any options. this is primarily because we have parliamentary form of government in india. hence even if we have a charismatic leader like obama and who is ready to serve the ppl honestly, he cannot do much because he has to subscribe to his party's ideologies. even if he becomes the prime minister he cannot take all the decisions alone. he has to consult his cabinet of ministers and other party members. and all of them are not like him. In the US, ppl can hope for a change because the actual power is in the hands of a single person. if he is bad he can be voted out (and that too after 4 years only). in india we have the same national parties since eons. however,we can hope for a change if we have a new party. i feel that young, educated middle class indians should come fwd and make their own party and contest the elections. we hav the best brains from iims and other good mba institutes. if they can run an organisation they definitely can run our country also.
