It suits Sonia Gandhi's long term plans to get her son into the top job, he's currently about 39 years old. Manmohan was the PM choice by default, as he has a clean record, & has no political ambitions, unlike Pranab Mukherjee, Arjun Singh & a host of old party timers who aspire for the PM's slot. We could probably see Manmohan Singh being retired on "health grounds" by Sonia in about 2 years from now, so that her son could probably take over the top job. & since Singh has recently had a heart surgery, this will provide a perfect excuse to retire him later on.

Well maybe Mr. Manmohan Singh will be the PM for 5 years & in the next election Rahul Gandhi would be projected as the congress party's PM.. He would be around 44 then..

1. It is an era of coalition politics, & a fractured mandate makes decision making quite tough with recaltricant allies/regional parties. In this context, INC has got a decisive mandate this time, better than the last one, & is less hamstrung by fickle minded regional players. So Rahul's task at governance can be made easier in this context.

2. We do not know the outcome 5 years hence in the next gene
ral election, the BJP may come back to power. So that may rule out Rahul's ascendency to power.

3. The next election may return to a worse result by the 2 national parties the BJP & INC. Regional parties clout may grow again.. so there may be a lot of uncertainty regarding Rahul's future. I feel this is the opportune moment to elevate him. Time alone will let us know.

Re: Elections in INdia 2009 (DemoCrazy) - 17-05-2009, 12:06 PM

Having a keen interest in politics and being from political background, been following the results since yesterday.

Though am slightly inclined towards NDA, I am happy that UPA has got majority and we will not see at least for the next 5 years the bonhomie's of chutta-mutta parties blackmailing the cabinet on issues. The govt can go ahead and do what it wants, without much of the fear of being "left" stranded.

Few people are happy, esp my parents, cos I had told them, If Mayawati becomes the PM, I will leave this country

BJP as of now seems to be going nowhere, and lacking a leader who can invoke pan india presence. May be a radical change in organisation is required, which will cleanse out the rot and may project a new set of leaders with clear ideologies.

Good to see majority of the criminal elements losing this time. Seems like the cleansing has begun. The next 5 years will be detrimental for Congress as they have few young leaders who ( even though nepotism has a role to play here ) have the opportunity to define the politics of next 20-30 yrs. Another delight was seeing Shashi Tharoor winning inspite of scathing personal attacks on his candidature. ( People who have seen how the Left campaigns against their opposition will know what I am talking about).

I was very cynical about the results this time. A hung assembly or a unstable govt. was a more expected result. But after this, my faith in democracy is rejuvenated. We have hope now, Yes we can

Rohit

Well first of i guess you both are definitely anti congress as is evident from your posts... We live in a democratic country, you have every right to be one... But the opinions you are giving are seemingly more out of anger rather that objective... There would be umpteen points i can put here but right now i'll stick to only few..

1) In 2004 everyone said it is the ambition of sonia gandhi to become prime minister... Those people got tight slaps on the faces wen she refused to accept THE chair of PM... Gimme 1 example in India who has done so.. People here are crazy for power...

2) You'll say that she is the actual PM and Mr. Manmohan Singh is just a dummy head.. Let me tell such people; "do you know why BJP had such bad results... Because you started your campaign on a fundamently negative base... you kept on saying the PM is weak and attacking the congress...Instead of counting negatives of congress you should have concentrated more on your positives.. I dont have to answer that...the country has done that for you.. (As for the debate whether PM is weak or not, I'll keep that debate for sm other time)

3) It was Rahul Gandhi who took the stand of fighting elections in UP and Bihar alone and not Sonia Gandhi's... I bet you might not bo knowin this.. Neways all the key strategies for the congress this season were decided by Rahul Gandhi as the head... The results are in front of you....

4) In Punjab, it was rahul gandhi who gave tickets to yound people this time and people who were fighting elections for the first time.. And kno wat most of em won (a couple won over the sitting MPs).

5) I am a secularism supporter and BJP's fundamental agenda of hindutva is wat doesn't attract me to it at all.... As for Rahul as PM, i guess people just need smthin to crib about... 5 years is a lot of time... And yeah hopefully if UPA comes to power then too, why dont you think Mr Manmohan Singh will be the PM again... He's 75 right now and would be younger than your 'majboot neta' even after 5 years....

6) Do not feel like writing more points..

PS: I'll prefer Rahul Gandhi over Varun Gandhi anyday

7) Yeah before i end,About Arjun singh, He was not given ticket this time.. Infact even his son and daughter were not given ticket by the congress inspite of arjun singh's hardcore demand...they fought independent and probably lost (I bet you didnt kno this either)

PPS: Plzz do not take this post as an attack against both of you.. I apologize if i sounded like that. These are just my opinions and sm facts

Cheers,
Rahul ( am not supportin him bcoz we share smthin common)

Re: Elections in INdia 2009 (DemoCrazy) - 17-05-2009, 12:29 PM

Well..
If we look at the elcections.. we perhaps can say the following..
>Excellecnt result considering that a single alliance has got majority.. Therefore no horse trading, no small parties with 1 - 2 seats yapping..
>Since the govt. has majority.. Decision making will be smoother.. [No Left parties threatening to leave..]
>What was the impact of NREGA & loan waiver schemes on voters [populist measures!!]
>What next for NDA [will it survive..!!], Rajnath Sing??, will he quit..
>Some BJP ppl are saying that portraying Narendra Modi as next PM was a mistake.. Then what will they do in the next elections..
>Prajarajyam has taken a beaating.. A drubbing.. perhaps these two words cannot justify what has happened to PRP..
>Mayawati Madam.. Next PM?? Ppl have shown their intention about Mayawati..
>Left parties have tasted realities.. They took a lot of things for granted..
>So Mr. Manmohan Singh.. What will he do in the next 5 years.. Some more populist measures coming in!!??
