A Good PC configuration.. - 03-06-2004, 04:15 PM

Hi all,

Me planning to get a new PC. I need a good high end pc , i have a budget of around 50k.
I compiled a configuration from the net, mainly using baazee to check the pirces. Please check the configuration and give ur comments... Also please check the prices and say if its cheaper/more expensive..

here goes:

Motherboard + Processor - Intel D865GBF MOtherboard + 2.8GHz Intel P4 HT processor. - Rs 13,750/-

512 MB DDR RAM - Rs 3500
Creative Inspire 4.1 Speaker Set + Soundcard - Rs 8000/- (is 5.1 necessary??)
120 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD - Rs 5000/-
ATI Raedon 64MB GPU - Rs 2750 (is this a right price?? i felt ATI Raedon is more expensive..)

Samsung DVD ROM - Rs 2500
Samsung CD Writer - Rs 2000
(which is better samsung or Asus?)
17" Samsung monitor - Rs 6000
Keyboard, mouse etc - Rs 2000

Total ~ Rs 47,000

The main points i need clarification are:
Is this the latest motherboard by intel?? if not, which is the latest model??

Is 2.7 ghz necessary?? wat is the optimum speed?
Is 5.1 speakers necessary? if so, how much more is it for??
Which is a good GRaphics card?? I need to play games like Half Life 2 (when it is released!!!)

do send ur comments...

regards

That is not the latest board by Intel. If you are willing to spend a little more go for a better mobo by Asus. They support the HT processors just right and are sizzling fast.

Graphic cards are very expensive in India. I would suggest trying to get one from abroad if possible. The ATI Radeon 64MB won't allow you to play Half Life 2 i.e with all the eye candy turned on.

Make sure the DDR is branded and runs at 333 MHZ or higher.

Cheers,

I have an Asus board and my comp runs almost 22 hours a day for the last 6 or so months. You just gotta make sure the fans are working properly and you can always add an extra fan in the casing.

For half-life 2, 128MB or 256 with a brand new graphic unit. Not those old ones

okai PG,

So which Asus board do u think i should take??
I also got an offer for ATI Raedon 9200SE 128MB GPU for Rs 4000/- Is that reasonable..?
Any idea if 5.1 is worth the money?? Ive heard that 5.1 comes to almost double the cost of 4.1 (soundcard+speakers) Is it worth it?? Do u get surround effect while watching movies on a 4.1??

Hi,
I have got a vintage 3 yr old PC myself ... but most probably will trash it ... and buy a new one

Here is my config ......... any suggestions ?

AMD AThlon XP 2400
Asus Motherboard Geforce Chipset ( can anyone tell me what is the latest mboard here ? )
DDR RAM 512 MB
Seagate/Samsung 7200rpm 80 GB HDD
Asus CDRW+DVD
Logitech Optical Mouse + Keyboard
Samsung 17" Color Monitor
Altec Lansin 2.1 Speaker Set

What could be the approx price of this machine ? I guess somewhere wround 30 K ?

I can't be too helpful with the boards. I have a Asus P4P 800 Mobo and its been a pleasure using it.

As for the Radeons, if you intend to game HL2 and the upcoming Doom 3, you would need a 9600 Pro or a 9800 Series Card. 9800 series cards are very exp. though.

As for sound, it depends on the quality of the speakers. But if the pricing is more than double for a 5.1 , then go for a 4.1. It will just lack one center channel, which wont really make too much of a difference.

47K for a Desktop!! Duh! I'd get my dream machine with that amount. You checked the prices online or something ? The rates look a lil steep here. I guess the 64MB card you talking here is a GeForce 4 and not an ATI one. Why dont ya try out the AMDs ? Hell lotta cheaper than the Pentiums and are FAST!
