I would like to enunciate, what I and a group of colleagues used to do in Delhi, and are carrying the trend forward.
We all had cars and we decided to cut costs by using just one car to ferry all five of us to the office. We decided on a meeting point and everyday one person would take his/her car out and pick up others from that meeting point.
After the office hours, all of us would travel back by the same car and the person would drop us at the same meeting point.(fortunately we all worked for a bank so no overtime)
In case somebody has a lot of workload, he/she would take out their car on that particular day only, or worst case scenario use an auto to get back.
By doing this we realised, we were saving a lot on money and of course polluting way less than we would by taking out our cars everyday for a single ride!!
Cheers!
PS : and yeah save water!! I realised how much water I've wasted since morning. Now I use half a flush for pee and a full one only for you know what!! I will close the shaft, when I'm brushing and use it only when its time to wash my mouth.Of course, I have bath once in a day and will not waste drinking water. | | | | | The Following 15 Users Say Thank You to chaitanya_yn For This Useful Post: | abhay agarwal (18-04-2008), arunk8186 (18-04-2008), catapult (18-04-2008), estranged_gnrs (17-04-2008), george_863 (17-04-2008), hareshmandani (20-04-2008), HarshaRocks (17-04-2008), krsh.vik (17-04-2008), kunalgupta (17-04-2008), man_on_mission (21-04-2008), monsterkartik (17-04-2008), ohmygoditsali (17-04-2008), prashant_iitiim (17-04-2008), sumitrocks (17-04-2008), swarnali (22-04-2008) | | | | |

Those who are used to flying know what a pain it is when one of the passengers has a baby which starts crying loudly from the first second to the end of the flight, while its parents try their best but to no avail. Everyone around starts getting annoyed but one can't do much with it.
I decided to try something I had thought of earlier in today's flight and it worked! I had purposefully downloaded some Tom & Jerry videos and stored them on my laptop for these occasions. Today when the baby 2 seats in front of me started crying, I gave my laptop with the cartoons to the baby's mom and the baby shut up within 2 minutes and the entire flight went off peacefully.
I'm gonna do this each time a baby cries in a flight

I would just like to tell this intiative taken in our compaany
In every company , whether its here or anywhere i have seen people taking prints of the mail and just filing them for no use.
Also people take the print of the whole history which sometimes runs into 20-50 pages also.
This leads to wastage of huge lot of paper. All of us know paper is manufactured using fibre which is a natural resource, and wasting paper means ur wasting a natural resource.
So, our company has taken this intiative that we will reduce the printing of mails.
With every mail there comes a message in the end which reads as
"Reflect on your environment responsibility before printing any email" So any one taking a print of the mail, thinks twice before he does that. I would suggest other puys to try this initiative in their companies so as to save huge wastage. I think i will..
Be pleasant to people.Smile at strangers. Maybe lend an extra hand .Answer the phone without that irritable zing in the voice. SMS an old friend. Drink less coffee and more water. Laugh at myself.Call up parents before they call. Not fret. Say thank you to the guard who opens doors when i leave office.
Thats quite a bit for today!! After all, tomorrow is another day.

Nice point kartik.
I too keep discouraging people from taking unnecessary printouts. Especially in offices or colleges, lots of paper is wasted since people take a printout of everything. I hate the exam times when every photocopy shop is full of people each printing 100s of papers only to throw them all away within a few days.
I keep rebuking people for that but it becomes difficult. Can anyone give an idea to stop people from doing that.
Another thing I do to save paper is never to ask for long telephone bills and instead view and pay bills online. So many of us get 10 page long detailed bills which we never open. Pain is nothing. Pain is in the mind. If you can walk, you can run. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. Great stuff folks!
I have more of a suggestion (I mean I practise it too) - Keeping the restrooms clean.
Most people come to the restrooms to relieve themselves but they hardly care about the people who clean it after them - I'm not talking about the public toilets in malls/stations/trains etc - That's a different story. I'm talking about the ones in corporate offices etc. The guy cleaning does so 24*7 and people continue to spill water and what not with no care whatsoever. I even see people spitting gum in the toilet basin - Can they even imagine cleaning it themselves?
This is a small effort in my company to educate people to do better for restroom etiquette(Picture should be self explanatory)
Pic also seen on my Flickr. Move Forward on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Another issue attached with this is the usage of tissues after washing your hands.. people use tons and tons of it and play throw with the dust bin - if it misses and drops on the floor (which happens all the time) - "wth.. the cleaning guy will take care" attitude. There were N number of times when I told a person "Can you please put it back into the dustbin, this is not your home". I could have done it the munnabhai way putting it back myself while he is watching - but he needs to clean his own crap and face the embarassment.
Just some thoughts. I know it feels dirty, its a small thing with small impact but neverthless a gud thing to do. You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club

A couple of my friends have started doing the same and I am really happy about it.
Yenjaay | I agree with you.. but partially.. coz
I haven't been following it..
1. Right from the prescribed books that we buy for Engineering (Either it is pirated or it is a photocopy of the original)
2. The OS that we use (atleast most of us) will not be original, same goes with a host of other softwares
3. The music that we listen to (MP3 and stuff)
4. Movies that we watch online and on disks that are pirated
All these steal the royalties that are meant to reach somebody or the other.. So it should not stop with Books alone but all these too must be included in the original buying list
Im not saying that we are doing wrong so lets continue doing.. But I feel its difficult to let go of these things for me..
PS: Jus a personal opinion... No hard feelings intended

Lets see this example that I'd put up in front of a Microsoft guy... Quote:
MS Office has, all in all, 40k+ features. If each feature costs me a buck to buy, MS Office cost is nearly Rs. 40k. (this around 2004-5 - when it did cost that much)
However, a guy, expert in MS Office, uses it daily, all the time, nearly 6-8 hours a day, will use up, in his lifetime, not more than 1k features.
A local DTP guy, will know and use only about 300-400 features.
A techie, or a tech geek, will know and use nearly 100-150 features.
A normal guy, the normal home user of PCs in India: not more than 15-20 features.
Out of 40k features. Now, if I pay a buck a feature, gimme only the features I use, and take only that much amount from me. But thats not possible. You have to give me all the 40k features, of which 39.99k features I will never use, and still charge me Rs. 40k. I'd rather pay 10 bucks a feature to the local piracywallah, and get that pirated CD for 150 bucks.
This is the tendency of a guy who 'knows' that s/he pirates stuff. The normal Indian PC user doesn't even know that.
| I can't afford the real stuff - so I pirate. But I do have a Jiminy Cricket for myself as well. What do I do then?
I have decided to do this:
1. I will not buy an IPod or any such device. No MP3s on the comp as well. I still follow this rule. MP3s on my comp add up to less than 100 MB. And all are freeware - like the National Anthem and such.
2. I will not buy Audio CDs. Again not because of piracy or the ability to grab from them - they just stop being usable faster.
3. I will listen to only original Audio Cassettes. My music listening requirements other than FM Radio are minimal. So I use a decrepit walkman that still works. I buy the cassette of the film/album I like to listen to, and use that only. Atleast that much piracy will reduce.

This BANDH cutlture in West Benagl is really very frustrating and irritating...it really suks...
Today one of the political parties (not the state Govt) has called Bandh(strike)..Reason: Increasing prices of essential commodities....wat d hell is dis...utter nonsense...how can a bandh bring down the increasing prices??infact worst hit by this bandh r the ppl who earn der livelihood by working daily....how will they get food to eat now??
I think the onus to defy this bandh lies on the ppl...even if 50% of the ppl will go to work ..it will really discourage this bandh..its we who r givin the encouragement to des political parties to call bandh..coz dey r very confident tat it(strike) will b a success...The day we will start resisting this bandh..(by goin to work)..These political parties will stop calling Bandhs...
I m proud tat i have played my part in making this Bandh a failure...I had the option of not comin to office today ( s i dont hav any work rite now)..but i came to office just to make this bandh a failure...it was lil diffucult to reach office..i have to walk a bit(isi bahane excersice ho gayi )..s hardly anything was plying...but finally i managed to reach ofc...
I request ppl to say NO to Bandhs...
