Life after MBA-Work profile of an MBA holder - 19-04-2004, 08:38 PM

Hi all
I registered here just now .It wud be nice if someone can throw light on the topic i have mentioned.coz rght now iam in a confused state of mind whether to stick with my job or to go for higher studies.
I am having thoughts abt higher studies just bcos i fell the current profile very boring and not much value add to myself.
If some alumini who is still a member of this grp but into work after graduating from a top school can share the same with me it wud be gr8.bcoz we all know the money is there in the field but what else is there like ur role wise, recognition, visibility and the corporate ladder which u are supposed to climb etc etc..
I hope i was able to make my point clear.

Cheers

Hi Aravind,

I think u r actually not satisfied with ur current job.. ..
see u got a few options open now..
1. Stick to ur current job and wait till u get promoted ..
2. Leave this job and go for a better one..( one suiting ur tastes..)
3. Go for higher education..( recommended only when u r clear with ur career goals)
If u r thinking of an MBA.. go for it only when ur sure that u wanna go for it.. An MBA will show u a way to fast bucks.. but then ur gonna spend 2 yrs for it..
An MBA will surely give u the much required recognition/promotion at a faster pace..
So, the choice is urs.. But .. b sure of ur carrer goals first..

cheers,

Anupam

hmm, so whats up Aravind?

Maybe we could have opinion polls with all those who had work exp and went for MBA to let us all know if their position (as they perceived) has improved or not.

LIfe after MBA , Life during MBA , Life Before MBA... Guess there are tons of blogs/forums on this...

Well ,
I am working as an engineer in a company dealing in power projects. We have a good number of engineers here ,a good number of managers here and a good number of people who are engineer and managers also who are looking after managing the technical functions of the comapny.
what I mean to say is that there can be numerous reasons to go for higher education or not .You may go to augment your present qualification, you may go to change ur present job profile or you may go for money. The thing which is omnipotent and very important in any case is that yo uneed to be clear about ur GOALS.
I have seen many engineers much more successful than their conterpart managers and when asked abt the success mantra they all specified the CLARITY OF GOAL.

Well Aravind,
Job life can sure be very boring and monotonous at times..I can say that having worked for 2 whole years...
It all depends more on how you take it rather than blame the job profile...
To think that a job after an MBA from a top B-school will offer you the job profile you need may not be right...
I have known ppl at a managerial level who crib abt their job profile..ppl at CEO levels change organisations seeking more challenge...
Basically what I am trying to say is, the hype surrounding an MBA degree and 'challenging career/growth' etc etc is not to be taken at face value...coz it is after all ...only HYPE.....A person may still not get the kind of life he/she wants xcept for the money part...
What you need to do is look at what kind of job profile are you looking for..
Take out some time and think for yourself, what exactly youd rather be doing when given ample free time and the freedom to do whatever you want...
Then decide on a career path that would cater the BEST to your needs,,,,Of course you may not still be 100% satisfied, but atleast you should make the best choice possible...
bye then
all the best!!!!!

First of all congrats to a pal who has asked a good qn. btw what he has asked was a real life experience of a b-school grad but ppl are more interested in giving him fundaes what and why he should do and not to do. ppl just keep on giving bullshit fundaes. To become a CEO of any good company you need min 23 yrs exp and one of our 23 yrs old friend saying there is lot of frustration and less job satisfaction at managerial and C level executives. I would be thankful if that person provide some stastics on it.
