Well I was talking abt the players who are not there on MvB's list. I guess almost all of 'em agree (atleast to some extent) that the team he's framed is world-class.

a twist in the tale - 19-04-2004, 08:26 AM

well just to thro some cats among some pigeons........ and since this is a site dedicated to management education here goes my small twist in the tale....... how about all u fans over there come out with a team of players playing right now.... the formation u'd like them to play and the seven substitutes......... reasons too...
rough rules one of the subs must be a golie (imagine an injury to u'r first )
look at the future include youngsters.........etc etc ...........heres my take.............

formation
4-4-2
-
g.k Iker Casillas(young plays behind a non existant defense and is a REAL shot stopper)
dr- cafu/salgado( my preferance for fast running great crossing wing backs shows )
dl- carlos( but prob both are hmmm a bit not young )
dc-john terry(young unsung hero of chelsea)
dc-nesta(needs no intro)
mr-joquin(betis chappie young quick great crosser must be good REAL are after him)
mc-aimar( needs no intro)
mc-ronaldihnio(needs no intro)
fc-ronaldo( god in front of goal...hmmmm a bit lazy god though )
fc-henry( not too many defenders like coming one on one with him pacy)
sbi craig bellamy(do i see shocked looks!!! well heres why he's here chases lost causes which the illustrious duo above find it below their dignity... young has a great attitude )
sb2 milito(zaragoza... holding up the club one man show... really young really good)
sb3 lampard/steven gerrad(hey a midfielder who goes and gets the ball see where real are once they let makelele off)
sb4 benni macrathy ( again the weak point of the hollowed duo abs no ability in terms of heading pushing shoving geting into scraps etc he does it with elan )
sb5 kaka( brilliant midder)
sb6 cudicini/howard( substit golie)
sb7 wright phillips(man city- prob one of the quickest and most talented wingers around)

ok comments may follow ... but after all its my team and my imaginary money

cheerio
j.p
p.s I too dislike arsenal but guys henry is a person any midder would like to pass the ball

an add on to previous post the shocked silences coz of left out players like
zizu- personally i think he's simply great but formy team in the mid he's too old and i guess i've got this small complaint abt him same as sachin if each had ten other sachins or zizus around them they'd be............... but hey we live ina mortal world .... no sheva ???? slightly too old for me.... as well as has serious confi probs now a days.... figo...hmmm lost his touch of yesteryear.....rio highly over rated..... viera.... i dont like thugs in my team even if they are pummelling the opposition becks..... who wounld like to have his magical right foot and the simply great heart he shows but sorry mate no place for u too other s will be xplained later
cheerio

7. Eusebio
8. Johann Cruyff
10. Diego Armando Maradona
11. Pele

Err....who plays left of midfield???
Anyway, in this scenario, here's my take:
1. Gianluigi Buffon (Casillas may be good,.......but this guys is da best!!!! )
2/3. Central defence : Terry and Nesta (NO debates!! )
4. Right of defence : Carlos (defender? who cares? )
5. Left of defence : Paolo Montero (Slightly out of position, but he's done it and he's fantastic!)
6. Central midfield : Zidane (lost his touch? Du watch La Liga?)
7. Central midfield : PAVEL NEDVED!!! (The player of the Year last year in my books! Thankfully he got the European Player of the Year at least. He's amazing!! )
8. Left : No debates. Giggs is good, so is Pires.....but Rui Costa is da man!!!
9. Right : Juan Carlos Valeron.....Figo seems to be fading. And this guy is really good!
10. Ruud van Nistelrooy/ Alan Shearer : With a midfield of that quality, I want a finisher. And that means someone good with his HEAD as well as the feet and a gr8 conversion ratio of chances to goals. Shearer is my pick for this. If not, it's Ruud. Henry is good....but useless at headers!!!!! What'll he do with the crosses that come his way???? ::::
11. Ronaldo : Any arguments on this one?

Subs : Lampard, Casillas, Henry, Sol Campbell, Ronaldinho and Kaka

Mike

Re: Football Dream Team (All-Time) - 19-04-2004, 11:30 PM

hmm, this is a tough one! dunno much abt footballers from the pre-80s era barring pele!
so,the ones who make it into the team from tht era hv done so purely on the basis of their popularity(ie..if i hv heard their name..they must be famous!)so,here goes
1.lev yashin/gordon banks....goalkeeper(2 of the very best)
2.paolo maldini...defender(he seems well past his prime now but at his prime, very few could get past him!)
3.beckenbauer...defender(the greatest ever)
4.alessandro nesta/carlos...defender(2 of the best in world football today!)
5.maradona.....midfielder(i don't think this needs an explanation!)
6.roberto baggio....midfielder(my all time favourite player despite that missed penalty in the 1994 final :( !)
7.zidane...midfielder(the one man who stopped brazil from taking tht world cup in 199
8.michael platini....midfielder(unfortunate to hv never seen france win during his tenure )
9.cryuff/rossi/marco van basten...striker(3 of the very best...though rossi won italy the world cup in 1982...the other 2 couldn't quite swing their teams fortunes!)
10.pele....striker(no explanations here either!)
11.ronaldo/eusebio....striker
may have missed out on some famous names but this is all i could come up with!expect scores of 10-0,12-0... if this team takes on anyone !
cheers,
suhas

Errr.Suhas, just a couple of doubts here....

1. Platini as a midfielder and Cruyff as striker???? Maybe you should change that around...

2. Marco van Basten DID change the fortunes of the Dutch team. Please note that HE was the man who won the Euro 88 for them.....almost single-handedly you could say. And there's NO WAY in Hell that Rossi or anyone else for that matter could rival him up front.

Re: Football Dream Team (All-Time) - 20-04-2004, 11:57 AM

i knew u would respond if there was anything abt marco van basten in the post ! well,i meant he didn't win them the big one..the world cup! he is still one of the greatest...no doubts abt that . i guess holland have always been unlucky when it comes to the world cup! they hv always had the biggest names in the business but somehow they haven't been able to convert tht to a wc win :( .
look at their team this time as well....RVn,edgar davids,seedorf,kluivert...
cheers,
suhas
