Not only the team owners but also the TV guys, Sony-WSG who bagged the rights for the IPL would need to break even. According to a report, even if the match ad-slots are sold for their highest price Sony WSG would take some years b4 they broke even!

Re: Indian Premier League - 21-02-2008, 12:49 PM

I am a bit surprised at the team composition and the way some of the people have gone about this..

I thought Vijay Mallya and Mukesh Ambani will bid aggressively and go for the big stars.
Jaipur,Bangalore,Mumbai come at the top in terms of amount spent in the bid.
Compared to Chennai / Hyderabad the teams also dont look that good.
ShahRukh and Preity Zinta have been very aggressive.

What is Mallya thinking ?
Will he get good players from the local pool ?
Can they win matches for him ?

Industry insiders say Sony's initial rate card for IPL matches is offering advertisers a 30-second spot for about $16,500 (That is something around Rs 6.6 lakhs for 30 seconds or Rs 2.2 lakhs for 10 seconds). This was the rate for normal matches in the 20-20 WC. The 20-20 WC semifinal has rates climbing to 3-4 lakhs and the final to 5 odd lakhs for 10 seconds.

There are 60 such(30 seconds) spots in a Twenty20 game, and in its first season IPL will see 59 games. That means Sony is looking at just under $60 million from ad revenues.

For the 59 matches to be played in upcoming IPL, Sony has paid BCCI $59 million (Rs 236 crore) for the first edition.

The prime-time exposure, the overall excitement around Twenty20 in general and IPL in particular, the predictability of continued viewer interest, all add up to a substantial value package for advertisers. Also IPL will expand cricket's core consumer group: attract younger audiences, more female consumers.

The first season of IPL is likely to be more extravaganza than pure sport, whatever that may mean in cricket's hedonistic age. Shows by movie actors (maybe Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla performing mid-field just before their Kolkata team comes out to bat); fashion shows in between innings; a draw of lots that has lucky ticket-holders invited to the pitch, and perhaps to a party with the teams later on - the possibilities are limitless

I'll be a Team Hyderabad supporter and I feel proud of the team composition.

They have good batsman - Gibbs, Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Gilly
Great All rounders - Afridi, Symonds, Styris, Silva
Their bowling may not be the best, but I guess bowlers like RP & Vaas can do good in T20 format.

This article from cricinfo here does talk about the 16500 dollar rate, but one seriously doubts that would be the case for each one of the 59 matches. After all, IPL would have direct competition from the usual soaps and other reality shows that would be aired during that time of the evening. Apart from that, there are many matches, that would be played in the afternoon as well, reducing the rates further, becoz viewership would accordingly be lower.

What this article probably does not contain are the revenues generated from broadcasting this to other countries, say the UAE or an Australia, either by selling the rights to that country's TV broadcaster or televising it themselves in a place like Dubai, where Sony may have a channel.

Have updated my site with a couple of articles on IPL as well, do read them whenever possible here

Your location says Bangalore and u gonna support Hyd.? Though I must agree that supporting bangalore in this format with this team would be difficult

It looks like, Vijay Mallya & Ambani wants only there boards to displayed during the match. They want after every over & after every wicket, kingfisher, reliance advertisements can be seen. They are more concern about money making. They are not playing cricket, they are playing business. Wether there team wins or loses, there adv should continuoulsy rock on television. On the other hand, Shahrukh has done a lot of homework before coming for bid. He did with proper planning. He is concern about his team. If he gets advertisement from this, his purpose is over.

myself a bangalore supporter, just for the sake of dravid( or conversely no team from lucknow to support ) but am really worried about the dearth of firepower in the team, afterall it is one of the main components of this format(looking forward to cameron white, who has a great reputation as a T-20 allrounder in australian domestic circuit),but the team is still not complete, hope some hitters get roped in,but one thing is sure that my team would last full 20 overs in every match, and sometimes that also makes a difference.
