I am digging up an old post but hey i guess this one does deserve an answer
Lets talk about the "Champ by Default" part first in 2k7 and ferrari being the better car...
1. Mclaren had the upper hand in Monaco the most technical circuit in F1 and in italy the fastest circuit in F1.. so clearly Mclaren were faster and more technically stable.. This was probably the best car Mclaren has had after 1998.. Ferrari on the other hand weren't the fastest in many of the races that Kimi won.. Silverstone anyone?
2. The Two tracks where driver inputs matter the most are Spa and Nurburgring.. Lets talk Spa first.. Kimi had the Triple there "Fasetst lap, Pole ans win"..If u remember Nurburgring Kimi had the pole, made a mistake on a wet track was murdering competition.. he had closed to within 1 second of alonso after losing more than half a lap after his mistake..That my friend is driver input..
3. Lets talk daredevilry now shall we? Kimi at Suzuka 07.. F1 goofs up and whoelse to benifit but Hamilton from it.. Started 19th of the grid after the order was settled in.. and then did we do something special.. His move on DC will go down as one of the best moves in wet weather racing.. Hell the last gasp move on Heikkis renault was a treat.. It needed a pair of balls that neither Alonso nor Hamilton showed when they were in similar situations.. Hell Hamilton couldn't get into points after being craned back onto the trach at Nurburgring..
4. and then the last 2 races.. The championship was Hamilton's to lose and he did it and did it in grand style.. WHile Hamilton and alonso were busy throwing mud on eachother there was one other driver who calmly worked on his race weeknds to make the most of nay given oppurtunity.. we saw measured drives for him at canada and Indianpolis when there were points for taking and brilliance at times when there were race wins..
5. One last thing i ought to mention if anyone saw kimi doing his inlaps and outlaps last year.. he made up 8 seconnd on track at Silvertone just doing his inlaps.. that was the drive of a racer who was thinking and implementing the same thing.. Somthing Mr. Hamilton and Alonso failed to do..
Quiet frankly anyone who questions Kimis victory in 207 must look at 2004.. schumi had noone to compete with.. The car was just too good for anybody else.. But hey this is F1.. U need both the man and machine to pull off this one and well Kimi was the man who did it...
I would so like to cite more examples of why Kimi is the best driver on the grid right now.. but may be someother time when some Kimi hater has another "waste" comment to throw about the "waste" racer we call IceMan..
Having said this the only prob with Kimi has throughout been not learning from his mistakes but 2007 was a new page in Kimis career.. it was surprising to see him hold himself back and setlle for points when they were available..adn beware this guy can only get better.. I have a gut feeling 2008 will be walk in the park after his 2007 experience.. Lets hope the maccas and BMWs can do something about the pace of that ferrari..
