there's an interesting story behind it...The current gauge distances have come from the earlier gauge distances
Rail lines were actually built by the same set of ppl who constructed tramways. These ppl used the same jigs for wagons as trams. This wheel spacing would work even for some old roads. These old roads were built by Imperial Rome. And the initial ruts were made as per contemprory war chariots.
Remember,4 ft 8.5 inches is just wide enough to accommodate the back-ends of two war horses.

Right Catcall and Neeti

So actualy we all owe it to Romans. But interesting thing is not a single country thought of changing it. Do you know at times even our space shuttles had to suffer because tanks needed to fit in them were larger than what those trains can accomodate. N it still is that odd value i.e 4 ft 8 and half inches or 143.5 cm

A friend in IIMA had told me that they are given names there. And there are so many people or to say corporate leaders who are still called by the name they were given at IIMA.

FOR EX : Manvinder Singh Banga, Chairman Hindustan Lever Limited is popularly known as "Vindi" Banga because he was given that name at IIMA

So, because Jaithirth Rao is from IIMA it must have been the name given to him there. But why exactly Jerry.... I got to google it out .Will edit this post and add it

Edit :

The name’s Jaithirth Rao —better known as "jerry ". His taller room mate at IIMA was called Tom (Udham Chowdhary) and he was the shorter one so was called "jerry "

In 1564 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX led to shifting of New Year's Day from April 1 to January 1. The Gregorian calendar which replaced the Julian calendar in 1582 confirmed it

[Actualy thats the first month as in as we know september ( sept stands for 7 so september should be the seventh month of the year) and october the eigth( when actualy it is the 10th month.) that way if we consider sept the seventh month and october the eigth we get feb the 12th montha nd thus all the closings are done in march and new financial year begins in arpil. ( Is it so ????? )]
