methinks i read it in reader's digest once.

The 'S' in Harry S Truman does not have a "." attached i.e.. it is not Harry S. Truman rather its Harry S Truman

does this mean that it stands for 'S' only ??

[Is in the most famous book of this author. Character is minor, even obscure. Has nothing to do with Hari Seldon of Asimov's Foundation series.]

5. Nicholas Kenton Haflinger
[Hero of an Orwellian novel in the 70s. First book in which the word 'worm' appeared to describe the network-clogging virus.]

6. Gwaihir
[Also called Sindarin in a certain ancient language. Has something to do with wind.]

7. Lestrade
[Whisky. Appears intermittently in a series, not solely in a single novel.]

hey gwaihir dude..long time no see....

Answers:

1. Canary Islands. Both of you're right.

2. It is the Detroit river. Detroit is also the largest city of Michigan (Though not the administrative capital, that's Lansing), and used to be the car capital of the world. QuintEssence is right.

3. All of them lie on the Ganga. I thought most of you would try to link them through some historical stuff, like all of them being part of the same kingdom etc., that's why I gave it under the Geography section.

4. Less-known. Neil Selden was the escaped convict who roamed on the moor in Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, and slightly diverted Holmes' efforts.

5. Shockwave Rider; was the hacker community's bible in the late 80s & early 90s. As QuintEssence said, is a classic, recommended for all who like books on Orwellian visions of a future world, and Über-hackers.

6. Gwaihir the Windlord is the king of the eagles in Tolkien's Lord of The Rings, is known as Sindarin in Elvish. Both right again. As for Quint's comment, I needed a break after carrying Gandalf around so much. He treats me as if I'm a taxi

7. Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard, regular visitor to Holmes' flat, usually accompanied by agitated gentlemen Both right again.

8. Archibald Haddock. Both right.

9. Society of Sober Sailors, LOL. Both right.

10. See Simon's post, attached at end of this. He's right.

11. Is the Maharajah of Gopal. Pendyal is right.

Yep, that's right Simon! The tip of the moustache is the only difference between these 2 gems of the CID. You can answer a question again even if someone has already answered it; just be honest and don't cheat from others. Answer a question whenever you see the post first time, and don't scroll down to see others' posts till you've answered yourself. You'll notice that Pendyal & QuintEssence have both answered many common questions.
And it is the Maharajah of Gopal for Castafiore Emerald. Gaipajama's king is in Cigars of the Pharaoh.

Does anyone here know the full name of NR Narayana Murthy? I don't know the answer. And just for quid pro quo, the full name of both RK Laxman & RK Narayan (They're brothers) is Rasipuram Krishnaswamy ...

No one can go back and make a brand new start, but everyone can start today and make a brand new end.

Hi guys!
A bunch of teasers for ya!

1) Who would be described thus: Born in India, played for England, banned in West Indies for playing in South Africa. (one of da most borin comms I no!)

2) Which cricketer (prob 1st of many) required "psychiatric help" after facing Lillee for the first time?

3) Am a hard core Steve Waugh fan. (undoubtedly the best batsman of this generation, in terms of effectiveness!) this ones for hard core waugh fans: How many tests did Steve Waugh win as captain in Sri Lanka?
