Altaf Raja on the forum….
I caught up with him for a PG exclusive interview. He was here in town to perform in the lush breath taking campus of Infosys Bangalore to entertain and envigour the ever mundane class of software engineers to give them a break from an impotent software routine. After an exhaustive performance, here’s the man and his pearls of wisdom:
Q. How did u get interested in Music ?
A: since a child I grew to the nonchalant preferences of the misled teens. Swaying only to ingliss pop and rock rocks, they exhibited sheer pseudoism of firang istyle. From that day on, I decided to marry the indian youth with fast ghazal style pop qawwali in order to give the likes of Britney Spears, Iron maiden and Pink Floyd a run for their money. That was my primiary inspiration.
Q. Did you have any formal training in music?
A: err…does it matter. U never ask these sort of questions to Anu Mallik. Then why me...??
Q. With so much fusion music and world music happening, do you think the traditional styles such as ghazals and qawwalis have a future?
How dare u ask such questions, did u know that most of the ingliss songs have hidden qawwali roots and their origin is mostly Indian. I can give u examples to prove. Hard rock has its origins the way sculptures in India in 15th century used to chisel the stone cut Ajanta And Ellora temples. Firang people came. They were not only impressed with the Indian positions/ideas of kamasutra, They also liked the sound of stone cutting and brick beating to such an extent that they stole the name as well and call it hard rock, heavy metal now.
Q. If u were to be performing on the stage with Madonna, would u allow her to kiss u on stage ?
A: Tauba Tauba. She is like a bhabi to me. How can u ask me such questions ?

what’ll her miyaan feel ??
Q. You have a very stylish way of dressing, where does all this fashion come from?
A: Actually I have a degree in fashion designing from the Dadar Commercial College. I feel that I should look different from others, that’s why I design my clothes myself and stylishly.
Q. What does singing mean to you personally?
A: If I can describe it in a sentence then I’ll say, singing is like making love. U do it in the bathroom no one bothers, u do it on stage, everyone applauds. so my message to the youth would be, keep on making love, u never know when u get lucky. Thanks to shabana Begum, Ali Darzi’s 3rd wife for making me lucky.
