Re: My model - 09-04-2007, 03:49 PM

which is where the graphics card will come into picture..
If this is the system I think it is (if its price was arnd 35K a couple of months back) then me thinks the graphics card is one of 256MB which would mean that its frikkin awesome for playing games!!!
A better Graphics card can offset a small lag in the RAM anyday.. coz the processor will be concentrating on the graphics card for stuff like games, adobe photoshop, proC or any other s/w for making 3d objects (an essential in presentation I have heard )

nice initiative

i am nt much of a comp-config person bt wd say the following is sought to b the minimum config for MS Office + Applications + Entertainment (movies + games) these days..

1. 80GB HD
2. 1GB RAM
3. 15+ inch screen size
4. DVD writer
5. Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (or equivalent)
6. good enough graphics card

All other things seem okay!! However RAM should be at least 2 GB.. (Tell us how much it will cost incl. extra RAM)

The second thing is a swiveling screen 12.1" will be much better for B-School purpose.. And prices of these have also fallen.. However if everyone agrees.

Hi,

U know it would be great if we can come down to a consensus as to what is the budget everyone is looking at.. Can we have a poll or something for it?

regards
Sriram

Re: Laptop - Bulk deal for PGites! - 09-04-2007, 05:18 PM

Hi Mahip,

Its a nice thing that you are helping out the Bschoolers on the Laptop bulk deals, thats really useful.

If you remember, last year I had worked out one mega bulk deal (in fact, the first ever on PG) of Dell Inspiron 640 M with a lot of customization. http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/your-i...=Dell+Inspiron

After having gone through your suggested deal, my experience with the bulk deal, usage of various laptops and having seen the other junta using other brands in a bschool and the needs of the bschool junta, I think This Model Just Won't Do! (my personal opinion).

Why I think so?

It is very very basic feature and it is well known that a good machine will help you experience the richness of the LAN. Apart from that, there are times when you feel damned coz of the prliminary model that you have!

Of course, you do use MS Office tools majorly but you use many more things quite often as well (Yes, if you are freak!).

Also, we bought 9 cell battery of Dell and that helps my laptop last for 9-10 hrs with min. brightness and for 6 hrs with max. brightness compared with 1-1.5 hrs max in case of HP/Compaq. Now, since most of the bschools are wi-fi connected, its imperative to have a good battery.

Also, speed is the buzz word while you are at work and if you find that you lappy takes 4 min to start (and the others take half a minture!) 1 min to perform a function (others do it in less than 10 sec!), though your lappy is fast enough, you really start hating your laptop since (sometimes, err, many times) you hardly have time! So, SPEED MATTERS!

This and many more things which are important to consider while making a purchase decision in case of laptop. Please go through the thread (http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/your-i...=Dell+Inspiron) where we had a detailed discussion and the arguments which might be useful to all of you.

All said and done, my roomie still uses a Compaq laptop which doesn't have a sound card nor does it offer wi-fi service! So, its upto you, what exactly you want!

Ciao

- Added a poll!

Thanks Euphoria for the inputs! Really need help of schoolers to decide upon the laptop. This COMPAQ V3228AU is one of the suggested models, we can always look for more models in & around 50k range.. Just need a little more search! I'll check out your last year's thread in detail!

Folks, please come up with new models and then we can compare upon the pros n cons & choose the best! Still a lot of time to decide and this should be more active after IIM results !!

I wont suggest a Compaq and AMD processors.
