Do only MBAs have a real big role in society????
All this India Shining that is harped around , the truth is that India is not shining for the myriad poor in the country..
Its true that building roads and providing electricity is necessary for people. But is that the only thing that makes India Shine??
Or Will just providing jobs to the IT sector make India Shine??
We are unable to provide food to the hungry although we have booming food stocks getting rotten and eaten by mice...

I know its easy to criticize then to do something by ourselves ,but the fact is that condition is very grave..

Just went to the station in the night today to recieve some parcel.had a coffee and came back. While going back to my car , I saw a woman , may be of 30.She was crying wildly sitting near my car.Had her hair dishevelled and looked real frenzied.I didnt know what to do.How could I help her?I went up to her to ask her problem but she was out of her mind. She was mumbling something that may be even she couldnt understand..Went back to the station and bought some packets of biscuits and a bread and gave it to her. While she was eating it some stray dogs came around her , barking and threatening to snatch the packets. .....India Shining.....

The thing is noone even looks at them.Noone has the time.Noone cares..
There is some serious flaw in our society or government or whatever it is.And we arent worried about it..

Sorry for digressing, but the point i want to make is that we make discussions , we talk about economy , we talk about purchasing power , we talk many things. But we dont do anything..

Rather thinking about the role of an MBA , may be we should think about the role of an individual towards the society...Because we are responsible towards the society and to that woman I saw today whether we are mbas or not..

i very much agree with 'cloud' in this reagard. an MBA is prolly the best education available to the most intelligent, talented & smartest junta around. if they r gettin' the best outta this society, they must understand their responsibility towards the society.

India doesn't yet qualify for elite club of the nations in terms of individual prosperity. MBAz must have vision to propell the country to the top of the lot and bring general sense of prosperity to the citizens. prolly that is the generalized role of MBAs in the society ...

pour in ur views frens ..

Earn a fat paycheck. Pay 30% of it as tax. Thats a hell lotta money. Work hard, earn more, get bonus and/or increments, and pay even more tax.

The thing is --> just with everybody working hard, its real good for the country. Im reminded of post war Japan in this regard...

I would agree that there are scores of such people in India more than any country. While I agree that we need to get rig of all this, and we have a lot to improve, I'd also say that this doesn't invalidate the India-improving signs we see in some places. You'd find rags even in the most civilized worlds.... heard abt rags, hippies in the Bay Area?

India shining is definitely an election gimmick... but India is definitely improving.. and there is something to feel good, if not about everything. Lets not sound sarcastic. Instead we can be optmistic, spread the feel good (whatever its worth!) and create an all-charged atmosphere....only then can we attract the attention of other countries. WIth such a huge population, globalization is the very essence for survival for us... and for that, others have to notice. There are no two ways for achieving this. Others have to notice. <Just realized that my post is a total discursion from the original topic >

The India Shining rhetoric will be in the drain..Just let the elections get over...

Buddy I didnt want to be sarcastic.I was sad...All the steps we have been taking have been more or less the same since the last 20 years..But the changes have been abysmally low or non existent...I really pray the "feel good" factor also goes to the ones that need it the most. Hope that other than the middle class group it also goes to the people below BPL.........The reason for my outburst was that there is a big hiatus between we people from middle class and the one from poor families. And sometimes makes me feel guilty of the things I enjoy in life..We take good food, good houses, going to movies for granted..And 30 percent of India finds it a luxury they cannot afford.. :(

Even my post is a total discursion from the main topic.. Sorry about that too

Hey,

I think that MBA has a much bigger role to play in the society. It's true that majority of our population is poverty striven and the govt's approach to these problems has been callous n lethargic. But I guess an MBA gives us options to start up new NGOs , community rehab centres, orphanages, education centres for the poor n unpriviledged.
At the same time MBA teaches us how to adjust well in the society. With time the society changes, n so do we. MBA teaches us how to cope up with small n big problems, how to cope up with the people we are living with, how to work in a team irrespective of class differences.
An MBA also provides an impetus to today's youth to rise up and project India as a brand image.
We all know that India is still far away from any of the developed nations in the world. But, we can't cry out for help especially when the govt. is indifferent . I think as individuals of this society, if we can try and influence the life of atleast one individual in need, we r doing something constructive for this society.

cheers,
Anupam.

Re: role of mba in society - 28-02-2004, 02:21 AM

why do you have to be so pessimistic.. hasn't much changed in this country in last 5 years. yes we do have beggers but so do have all the developed countries. why do you always have to see the glamour side of it..

even if the india shinning campaign is a election gimmick, arent we doing better now?

can you deny that more jobs are created now in india.. better still we are robbing jobs from the said developed countries.. and its not only IT. isnt they manufacturing sector doing well?? auto and auto components? dosent building roads provide jobs ?
chemicals, telecom, pharma.. are they not doing well in india..

ranbaxy had to wait for year to get a appointment with walmart procurement manager in 1998 coz they wre not sure of the worh of a indian pharma company.. now it has subsudiaries in US..

yes we have people in india who dont have a complete one time meal and they dont know what feeling good means.. but you and I who are educated sure understand this..

so why dont we stop cribbing and make the most of whats available and give back in whatever form we can? atleast you have the facility in india to get that much hyped mba degree for a fraction of the cost of what it takes in other countries..

hiiiiii
agree fully that MBA has the capacity to transform the country and really make it shine. but the main issue is it is we who should take the iniative. how many ppl after MBA actually think about this? hardly handful. so that means MBA has become a degree to be flaunted, a status to be earned. there needs to be a change in the attitude.
so all those who do an MBA remember this is the best way of giving back to nation wat is has given to u
