Presently, i use SKYPE. Whenever the internet connection is available, it would automatically login and the symbol changes to green... but it is a problem that i got to keep checking it everytime and if the screen switches off, then i have to divert my attention from my work and see if the connection is available or not... really frustrating at times!
Anyway, dint quite understand ur ping method.... wat lights are u talking of ?

I get the gateway funda but u c, to the pc connected means connected onto the network whether connected to gateway or not, it will show connected.... Just like skype, google talk , msn msgr all things where auto login is enabled will login once it comes back online...
Ping basically means that the pc sends packets of data to a specified address and if there is a reply means the connection to that address is working..... The address i am talking about here is an ip address.... when u ping an address and there is no reply then u will get a msg saying request time out.... i ping the isp homepage.... that way i can be sure to know when the connection is working...
The lights i was referring to is the lights of the connection in the system tray...bottom right basically as u might know there r 2 lights one incoming and the other outgoing.... when connection is down then only outgoing will flash frm time to time while incoming will remain off. when the connection is fine, depending on usage the lights flash intermittently.
Whenever u ping and get a response then both lights will be on till the ping command finishes executing. so i ping the isp address and when the net is out, i get request timed out and if its back then the lights will be on.....
how to use the ping command
start< run < type ping "ip address"
this will send 4 packets, for unlimited packets type ping "ip address" -t (w/o quotes)
to end press control and c or simply close window.
p.s if u dont know the ip address just type in the name of the site.....i.e google.com or sify.com etc etc
when ur nets working fine, type in the site name and note down the ip for use in the future.
its better to ping with ip address. the reason is little bit complicated... just trust me that keep the ip address handy while pinging, its a sure shot way of checking whether the net is working....
Hope that answers ur queries....
