Actually, the trouble is something like this:
I used to play Max Payne earlier and have completed both the parts..... But, now whenever i try starting it or any other game for that matter, my systems hangs.... It is not able to run any games.
Actually, i had left my system in my flat for sometime and when i took it back, i discovered that the RAM was broken and the socket was also a bit faulty..... due to which (once i changed the RAM), whenever i used boot, i would not get the POST beep and when i would re-start my PC, then i would get it...... (sometimes it used to happen that i would have to re-boot my system 2-3 times to hear the POST beep!)

Hey Gaurav,
I am not 100 % sure, but U know what its a trial-and-error game...!
What seems to me, as the problem in ur pc is that:
As the h/w RAM slots were tampered, ur operating system fails to recognize the Virtual Memory set originally by the OS while being installed. Normally, games like Max Payne et al, use a lot of Virtual Memory, while they're being run, so once the set parameters are mangled, they fail to run. I've had the same thing with Max Payne once, so after that I just hit format for c: , installed Windows again, and voila, everything started working properly, as it always does after a re-install...as they say, starting off with a clean slate.
I hope this works for U...!
Cheers!
Nikhil

Hi Nikhil,
thanks for replying!! i have tried everything.... From formatting my hard disk (actually got a new HDD as the ol' one crashed) to updating the drivers, re-installing the game on the clean HDD, et al... but nothing seems to work...
The game begins to load but then it hangs! I thought it might be a problem with my sound card, etc and i updated the drivers for that too.... but nothing works!
Do u think, it is a hardware problem or a software?

Hey Gaurav,
Hmm...tried everything, man and ur still after that game, hehe!
If every other application on the system seems to be working fine, then I think it might not be a h/w problem; but keeping in mind problems with booting as mentioned in the earlier posts, it can be h/w too.
Why don't U log into BIOS and see, if there is something amiss...?
After that I would suggest, some softwares like Motherboard Monitors...that would give U a clean idea of whether the Motherboard is fit or not, a peek onto download.com, will give U a dime a dozen of the sorts.
And last but not the least, even trivial, have U checked whether the game needs a Virtual Drive...?
Try these out, I'll refer ur problem to few more Techies, and will try to find out a solution for the same...!
Cheers!

Hi buddy,
thanks for replying again... More than going after the game, this is this inquisitiveness that is driving me... that what the hell! happened to the system, because i have played both the parts on the same system (actually that time, i had only 256Mb RAM and later on, i upgraded it to 512Mb)
As i told u, there it one start-up problem, that the system hangs or there is no POST beep.... then i have to re-start the system to get it (Let me know about this too )
I have checked the BIOS hundreds of times, but there is nothing that i can configure.... Even tried updating my directx drivers.... which by the way, shows an error.... I am able to run the simple graphics check, but when it comes to 3D acceleration checking, the system hangs.... I figured, that maybe, this might be a problem, but still wonder that it played even the last time with no 3D accelerator card... So what's wrong??
As for virtual drive.... i have the crack of the software, through which it doesn't require a VD (did it the same way the last time, too!)
Any suggestions?
