Agreed that his performance in has been par excellence but you need to give some time to Kumble ; I have complete faith that the man would quit the day he feels he is no longer needed and or there's someone better to take his place...

B/w India going great on the 4th day : 181/0

forget chawla,forget ojha,forget mishra
even if these guys hadn't come to the scene
kumble's place in the squad would have been questioned
no doubt our middle order failed in sri lanka
so did kumble (and bhajji too)
and here what a circus he put up in the 1st test
effectively india carried a load who cant bat and couldnt bowl wen it mattered
he has sat out in this one and see the difference in the attitude?
u can ignore the journalists
but how can u ignore the ex cricketers and more importantly statistics?
well this has happened in the past as well
arun lal played brilliantly wen gavaskar opted to sit out and in the next test gavaskar decided to play and the your lal was dropped
more than 20 years have passed
indian cricket remains the same
poor luck mishra
previously they said performing at the ranji trophy doesn't ensure an youngster has in him to replace a non performing big cat in the international arena
now wat?
even international performance isnt enough to prove his abilities?
well maybe i am wrong

Which test match was that and more importantly which was that brilliant innings by Arun Lal?

i just referred to the bengaluru test where kumble was unfit to bowl

@ andy

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - Arun Lal

read the profile part

Rewarded with a Test place against Pakistan at his adopted home in Calcutta when Sunil Gavaskar refused to play there, Arun made a firm statement of purpose with two half centuries.

the particular series

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992-93...86-87_Pakistan

scoreboard of 2nd test at kolkata.check out for arun lal's scores in both the innings

http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Arch.../48/48310.html

scoreboard of 3rd test at jaipur.can you see arun lal's name here?

http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Arch.../48/48345.html

hope your queries are answered

Re: Cricket Trivia and Discussions.. - 20-10-2008, 08:39 PM

A statement of purpose is different from a statement of brilliance. Guard against even the remotest of exaggeration.

And I hope you didn't mean that India should have kept Gavaskar out of the team.

Ian Chappell? You want to believe the Aussies? Australian media and ex-cricketers have already caused sufficient probelms for India and many other teams with their solicited or unsolicited comments in the past. Do you remember who gave the biggest blow to Indians prior to the 2001 series in India. I remember what had this very same Ian Chappel written then in a column in one of the newspapers here.

And Damein Martyn is no1 to comment on this matter. I mean, what the ****, if you start paying heed to what every1 is saying, .. Australian media doesn't give a dime to what even Sunil Gavaskar says. Not even a dime. When an Indian team goes down under, no newspaper approaches Sachin Tendulkar or any Indian coach to write a column. It is not because cricket is not popular there, it is simply because they don't need other's opinions on their matters. And here, we have our media lining upto Damien Martyn, Brendon Julian, David Boon and God knows who not for their expert comments.

Dilip Vengsarkar is 1 person to whom you can listen. But, hell, we have a Bishan Bedi for every Dilip Vengsarkar who says Kumble should go.

All said and done, I also agree that Kumble should probably not be playing the next match on the basis of current form. But, he deserves much better treatment than this. He is our national team's captain (for the entire series), he has won more matches for India than any1 else ever has in any format of the game, has carried himself and his team remarkably well and has always given his everything. He is not your Sachin Tendulkar or Saurav Ganguly. He deserves to be kept and handed the captain's role if he is fit. If there is anyone who can drop him, it is he himself. Now that he is our captain, he alone should decide if he wants to play or not. And if he decides to play, we need to give this wonderful servant our full support.

Added Later -
And I followed that Colonel link you have given. It is an irrelevant link, what the colonel is speaking about is the scenario when Kumble is unfit. And that is not what we are discussing here. We are assuming Kumble will be fit for next match and then he should be selected or not. Is any1 here saying that he should play even if he fails the fitness test? Well, I think even the colonel didn't say that a fit Kumble should not be selected (as per the contents of the link). You shouldn't have dragged his name here.

I never said keeping Arun Lal and dropping Gavaskar was the need of the hour(though Gavaskar scored a first ball duck in the first innings of the Jaipur test )
I just said even after 20 years,Indian cricket has not changed a bit
My advice would be to allow Kumble to take rest for the remaining series and give him the farewell against England.Sourav would be gone by then,so India can go in with 5 bowlers. But dropping Mishra even after a 5 wicket haul on debut will be sheer injustice to the chap

So based on that 1 test.. we have come to a conclusion that the man, who once batted with a broken jaw to save the test for India, who took 10 wickets in an innings, who is unplayable in the fourth innings, who has over 600 wickets be dropped because someone took 5 wickets on his debut ??

No, I'm not saying that Mishra is a bad bowler but, Kumble is a better bowler.

what statistics are we talking about here ??

If you consider 3 wickets equivalent to a fifty and 5 wickets a 100..

Kumble has made 11 fifties and 2 hundreds in the last 27 innings (15 tests) (India didn't get a chance to bowl in the second innings on 3 occasions) and has gone wicketless just once (not taking B'lore test into consideration). Add to that, lion-hearted 20s, 30s and 40s as a lower order batsman. (compiled from here)

What's really hurting is.. 1 test and 131 tests.. Is there any comparison ??

Yes, he'll have to go if and when his body has had enough or when he is not performing but making such bold statements after just 1 innings or 1 test is a little too much, I say.

And you know what he did in Bangalore soon after that? Anyway, yes it will be darn difficult for Amit Mishra, but his chance will come soon enough. And if he really is good enough, he will still make it. No need to sweat, time will, as always tell. For now, I am too excited that India has Amit Mishra as well as Piyush Chawla in its bench.

Re: Cricket Trivia and Discussions.. - 20-10-2008, 10:09 PM

TIMESNOW.tv - Latest Breaking News, Big News Stories, News Videos -

I don't know what the selectors are trying to do. As a test batsman, Yuvraj Singh has failed in Australia (i.e. he has failed against top quality fast bowling in Test Matches). And it is no secret that he is terribly average or even worse against good spin bowling (Ajantha Mendis and Murailtharan have troubled him to no end). Now, what purpose is his selection in the next match's squad going to serve? There is no chance of him playing the match (Laxman will obviously be prefered to him).

And a fluent 100 in a first class game against this Australian attack doesn't tell us anything about him which we do not already know. He scored quick runs against good pacers on flat pitch. He has always been good in doing that. Average spinners like Kresza didn't trouble him. Well, they are not supposed to trouble him.

Only if some Indian middle order batsman is not fully fit that his selection will make sense.

@utsav

no i'll never forget the calypso music of kumble.with due regards to the most unsung hero of indian cricket,we cant judge anyone by his past performances.in the past he was awesome, but age takes its toll on everybody.will it be fair to select teams on the basis of names?

@andy

sourav's place will be gifted to yuvraj in the first place.if he fits in rohit, raina, badri, pujara and virat will have to wait longer.but if he fails then only these guys will get a chance.u call it circus?we call it indian cricket
