Re: Radio fans anyone!? Your Fav radio station? - 08-11-2006, 07:25 PM

I'm a keen follower of the radio FM market..Read this for more business and less music knowledge

When I was in Delhi-used to listen to 98.3 Radio Mirchi and it was my favourite

& in Bangalore had 2 listen 2 Radio City..(had no choice;Radio City had monopoly, although radio mirchi n others have reached there too)

Radio Mirchi gets more brand awareness in Delhi & Mumbai due to the large selling Times Of India..both comes from the same business house(Bennett,Colemn & Co.)..

Radio City has got a first mover advantage in Bangalore's youth crowd, would be interesting to see how they compete.

In the poll,Big FM n Sun FM was not mentioned..and I think coming from big business houses such as Adlabs(R-ADAG) and Sun group respectively gives them a huge funding and they can invest heavily..

Big FM started with launches simultaneously in Delhi,Hyderabad,Chennai,Bangalore. Abhishek Bachchan as brand ambassador tells that how much the company is looking forward to this sector. Also they opting for a unique approach of taking TV stars as RJ, so that more people can associate Big FM..

More interestingly,Big FM has launched services on all major south indian cities, so as to gain advantage from its big rival-Sun FM

World Space Radio is targetin a niche market and its sales are rising very fast..A.R.Rahman as their brand ambassador is really making people buy their product..WSR sometimes back used to charge Rs 50 as their monthly rental, they hiked it to Rs 150 and r trying to cater the niche market..

Waiting for all channels to launch their services @ Nagpur

I also used to like it in the beginning, but now I think it has become too repetitive especially if you listen to it at the same time everyday ??:

I know the licence fees is very high in comparison to the revenue of these stations. But somehow I am missing the data.. What is the annual licence fees like?

No surprise that only the big media players can now sustain a FM radio station:
1) Radio City: STAR Group
2) Radio Mirchi: Times of India Group
3) Red FM: India Today Group
4) RadioOne: Mid-Day Group

Hey Mahip,

India Today group has sold out the Red FM brand to NDTV, Malaysias
Astro and Hyderabad-based Value Lab (used google 4 d names)

But interestingly India Today group has bidded for the 2nd phase of radio licensing..

Also,BBC has acquired 20% stake in Mid Day's radio..

And Mr Rajeev Chandresekhar (BPL group) has also invested money through Radio Indigo

So,we can see a lot of big media players now

Note-I think,I'm talking too much business? This thread is under Chit-Chat!!

Being in Bangalore, the only station I like is Radio City. The RJs are not pakao

One thing I dont understand is why do these stations need to have the regional influence. Radio City earlier was all about Hindi and English songs. But now half the time u get to listen to Kannada songs which make no sense to me at all. Considering that this is a cosmopolitan city with a large part of the crowd from different cities, what sense does it make? Cant they just have another radio station for the regional language stuff? I am sure a lotta ppl have faced the same situation. I know its the same, if not worse in Hyderabad, with Telugu songs playing all the time.
One of the stations here has a stupid concept of playing kannada and hindi alternatively. What purpose does this serve???

Anyways ....I love the program Pink Noise on Radio City cos they play good English tracks every night 9 to 12.

Here in NCR..We have nine FM channels..

1.Radio City-formerly 91,now 91.1 FM..(am wondering if Numerology has reached the verranda of FMs too after haunting Kekta kapoor..) Clogged with ads entire day but coolest songs after 12 o clock..best for nightbirds like me..
2.New BIg - 92.7 FM Has some cool RJs...but that's about it..in everything else,it looks like a lame copy of mirchi n city..with similar selfpraising jingles,plentyyy of ads..n similar choices of songs..in short..same crap..
3.Red FM -93.5 Songs lineup is ultimate..especially on weekends.. But its Main USP was RJ simran who sold off to 92.7 FM now..:(
4.Radio one-94.3 just as ordinary
5.HIt FM - 95 This with fever 104..is my favourite..no bakshak..no RJs..no crap..only songs..n best thing is you get to listen to English,fusion,hindi,punjabi all..!!!!
6.radio mirchi - 98.3 All hype no substance..A jeeta jaagta example of what excessive publicity can do..all the hardwork they do..is in making new jingles..telling us how everyone is always khush (not) listening to their pathetic lineup of battered songs..ads ads ads..n hopeless RJs..
7.AIR FM RAINBOW-102.6 Some quality still left..but in some of the shows only..They speak in between the songs..which is irritating..n at times they talk as much as mirchi RJs..:(
8.FEVER- 104 Though came after 95fm had already swept the city off its feet..still is a good channel..I keep on switching from 95 to 104..it has rjs mambling in between compared to 95..where there r no rjs at all..but still they dont speak much just give info about the songs..Kool station..!!!has got the right mix of oomph factor of mirchi n content style of 95..
9.Fm gold -106 lesser said the better...Ek zamaane mei had some kool old songs..ab all i hear is discussions in maithili language..

hence..95 n 1O4..tops my list..
You know who to blame If i lose my hearing ability in a few years..
