worst criterai to evaluate child on these critertia.

1. first ranker in your class ( and even at IIT and IIM) is not the richest.Nandanelkini is 6 pointer at IITB. even if you take my example the first ranker in my class wasn't able to get into IIT. and your sincerly ( not boasting) who used to take tution from him was able to. I was never in first 10 in my class and got maximum % in class twelth.
but that's not the end some who are bad in class and not able to get into IIT and are now in IIM's. and I can't ( till now)

Legend: Gates nd Dell never finished graduation still are among most respected in biz world (among richest also).
exam fixation is more in India. most of the schools/colleges in developed economies(US etc) look for well rounded persons and not only marks for admission in to higher courses.
In India also CBSE and some other progressive boards are looking at more well rounded personality development rather than exam marks.
till now at least in India those who can mug up those 150 questions and gurge out in exams get the best marks...has no relationship with career progression in industry or society. nobody cares for which exam u passed and how much % u got after your Ist/IInd job. all ppl look at is knowledge, ability to lead, attitude and so on.
i will always put a child or a kid ahead if s/he is generally aware about things around himself/herself, is curious to learn, has extracurricular interest rather than a bookworm with hi-grades.

Examinations are definitely not true judgement of a child's performance.... It doesn't even come close to being fair.... A child will perform only when there is no pressure on him to score a certain level of marks..... When there is pressure on a child to score marks, his attention and cocentration goes towards finding ways (right or wrong) to score marks, instead of learning..... But alas! today most of the parents and teachers consider only marks a way to judge their children's performance....

Plus, there are some criteria such as focus, motivation, concentration, imagination etc which exams cant catch in one go.

ya i know that evey1 out here hate exams but the reality is that there has to be sum criteria on which ppl hav to be judged & that has been named exams if there were no exams emagine what would hav happened every student must hav said "yes i hav understood" and not bothered to know the details even if he had not heard the teacher at all and these exams like CAT etc. how they would hav admitted students if there were no exams

Examinations are not the true judgment as i had managed to score 74% in 10th & my teachers told my parents that he will have tough time if he takes up science. But i took up science & got 84% in 12th & PCM 90%.
Except your studies, extra curricular activies should also have some wieghtage in determing the final ranking of the class. This will lead to all round development of a childs personality.
